Speed with Guy Martin - new series
Discussion
Lets face it, someone was obviously already doing the shell and the CFD on it as a project at Hallam, the bloke at the end probably got in touch with Guy to see if he wanted to run it down the hill, so they bunged it on a basic Formula Student chassis they already had with a shorter roll hoop, etc, put on the FS suspension or a version fabbed up from that design and locked it solid - explains the double wishbone setup and rose joints - and then the brakes would have been freebies due to the factory exposure, and the wheels were the only thing they bought, on a shoestring, with a little fab work to fit the uprights. Which is why you see little to no fabrication or design work on the chassis, suspension, etc. Guy probably wasn't involved when that was being done.
Then C4 threw in the bobsled training and the training with Guy to make a program. So you basically got a couple of different projects bolted together to make something.
However, the time and expenditure on each seperate product would have been immense compared to just building something to go down the hill from square one without the glaring issues. Instead you got 'assorted Sheff Hallam projects with Guy Martin' which is fine, it made great TV.
It didn't however, make a great engineering solution to the stated goal. Because even the materials cost would have been substantial, even if the uni was funding most of it through heavily discounted suppliers from the FS side, they still wiped out a lot of arms and joints...and it's okay saying 'well it was free for advertising/exposure' - but then so would the same parts in a design without the issues...
Even then, it still doesn't explain the unshrouded/disced wheels.

Hope (is there a worse name for a company producing brakes?) provide Guy with raffle prizes for his calendar so must have a good relationship.
They do, he is/has been sponsored by them. His favourite shorts are Hope ones.Gassing Station | TV, Film, Video Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
