So Sky put the price up AGAIN (from dec 1), adding £1 a month for voicemail and £1 to monthly line rental.

I currently have multi-room, HD, Broadband and phone, plus variety. No Sky sports or movies.

We spend a lot of time watching Netflix, so the TV bit is starting to look like a waste of money.

BT option doesnt work as we live in a valley where aireals dont work.

Virgin Media isnt available, so I guess Freesat is the only way to go?

Any suggestions on boxes ideally keeping as much HD as possible?

Anything I have missed? Broadband gives us around 20mb at the moment.

Threaten to leave, tell them you can get better deals and your phoning up to cancel.

Sky have a specific department to deal with this called customer retention.

You'll soon find they will knock off a few quid quite easily to keep you.

We had the same issues with Sky, plus their piss poor customer service meant I binned them about 18 months ago.
We use the standard freeview, which on our telly's give a better picture, we use Netflix and love film.
We haven't got Virgin in the village, I haven't thought about BT, to be honest getting rid of Sky has changed how we watch telly, I can't see me ever going back.

I can't do but TV as no antenna signal. I think free sat and Netflix will be fine.

Can I just do phone line and broadband with sky?

You could, but I imagine you can get the same service for less somewhere else.

I got rid of Sky when I moved house. I had the internet/skytalk and TV package. This was a basic package and in the end the price just kept rising.

When I moved I got a freesat box which plugs into existing Sky dish connections and a roku streaming box to get Netflix. I now get my internet and phone from Talktalk. (I know folk slag them off but I've never had an issue in 2 years and they were the one company that could fit a phone line/internet connection within a fortnight of me moving house).

I can't say I miss Sky or their prices at all.

Just looking to get rid of sky ourselves so an interesting read.

We have sky multiroom (lounge/bedroom) both wired to the sky dish.
I'm not up on freesat, is it possible to buy 2 freesat boxes and run through the sky dish?

Can I buy a used freesat box, ebay etc...

Thanks
Rob

There are plenty of alternatives. If you have good xDSL connection then take a look at MAG-250 which uses streams from the internet. Alternatively you can get an open STB and receive other European satellites. Take a look here http://linuxsat-support.com

My understanding is the free channels will still work, but you will lose the ability to pause/record unless you buy a new freesat box.

Do you need a digital aerial? At present just an old aerial that won't pick up channels...

Both TVs are smart if that's any help.

That is correct and what happened with us.
In the end I binned that and used the TVs own free view.
A really good aerial will cost about 50 quid plus fitting, I also added an amplifier that has about 6 outlets.

I've been quoted £250 for a new digital aerial hmm

That was for the 2 rooms and extra wires installed for the kitchen....

Despite wanting to cancel sky I phone 3 times now and still not cancelled.

After some serious haggling I got it down to about £45 for the lot but only for 8 months. I decided to think about it.

2nd time I got the dourest female operator on the other end I was determined to cancel. She then insisted I needed the last 3 digits of my account number to pass security which I didn’t know off the top of my head so had to put her on hold while I got my wallet when I come back she was gone…….

3rd Time the guy was a cheery bloke, got him down to about 40% off but then had another call coming in that I had to take…….

It’s not very good value for us, the films we’ve all seen by the time they come on Sky. I use the sport a lot and this makes the films only £6. Once the rugby autumn internationals have been on I think I can live without it considering we’re paying over 1K per annum for it.

I shall cancel today.

1k a year! feckkkkkkkkkkkk

We're in the sticks, so can't get their super fast cheap broadband, we're on old ADSL2 tech, and our bill is still less than £60/month.

Good luck with the cancellation.
We move from Sky to BT 14 months ago. We were pissed off with the desperate up-selling and no easy way to shrink the subscription package.
If they had an on line way to do that easily we would have stayed.
But no; they treated us like pondlife, so we mved.

I missed Sky Atlantic, but that is about all.
The BT customer services team after you have signed up are...a giggle, and character building (like scar tissue in a young gentleman).

If the deal was right in a couple of months, we might go back - however as others have said Netflix does provide a top service.

Funny how experiences can vary.

I have never had a problem with them. I signed up for the HD package, now called heritage HD because it includes F1 without sports, in 2009. Complete with phone and broadband.

I don't touch the TV package to ensure I don't lose the heritage HD, but every year I phone them ad have general winge about the phone and broadband, this year I told them I can get BT for X, they are them same, but I then have to pay £12 on top for BT Sports. Couple of minutes later I got free broadband for the year.

Thats the problem for me, the heritage HD. I only watch F1 (in terms of sport), so don't want to have to pay for all of them. I manage to get them down to cheaper than if I was paying for the whole sports pack, so I'm happy.

Sod having netflix, iplay and the rest. In the limited time I have to watch telly, sky's best, no searching, all my favourite TV listed in one place for me to watc.

Do what my friend did whistle Buy a decent PC, get a decent internet connection and download all the good stuff when you want it. Then simply watch it when you're ready.
