Listening to some gumpf on Radio 4 this morning about the dumbing down and iconography of modern films, it seems the other direction they're taking is that because China is the new holy grail for revenue, Hollywood needs to prevent ostracising them by reducing the script(!)...and maximise the visual impact.
Jason Bourne, for example, says only 288 words in the entire (new)film (45 lines or something)....and you only have to punish yourself and watch the new Independence movie to see how Chinese faces and script are getting involved to help the marketing.
Quite interesting in a way...
Also covered in the Kermode podcast I mentioned above. It's really good! Listened to it now
It ties in what what I have posted before. The children of the 80s are now in charge and they wanna see what made their childhoods great again.
Never knew that Transformer 4 was the biggest film of 2014...how sad. I stopped watching them before that, dunno which was the last one I saw but I just got tired of it, it was beyond lame.
I suppose the weight of st films will increase until the law of diminishing returns kick in.

I'll wait for some feedback from normal people.
A lot of the anti in the press seems based on the personal politics of the reviewers, it's all much the same sort of thing. Say for example Robbie Collin in The Telegraph 'crushingly puerile comic-book pornography', stuff about guns, the treatment of female characters, a snarky rant about the reaction to Ghostbusters, blah blah blah.
I can see one or two common threads of actual genuine criticism about aspects of the plot and structure but most of it just seems to be posturing.
It may well turn out to be a st film with good trailers but when supposedly professional critics react like sulky children I'm not likely to pay much attention to their reviews. Plus what critics like and what everyone else likes are very rarely aligned.

A bit nervous about it now. Having looked in depth (without reading anything about the film itself) it sounds as though it will be a big letdown if you're expecting the fun, noisy, brash dayglo fun from the trailers and posters, in fact many say it's pretty much unrecognizable from the brilliantly realised trailers.
A bit like Life of Pets, then, in an odd way, brilliantly marketed but absolutely not the film 'promised' by the trailers.

I'm glad someone else thinks that...I REALLY hope SS delivers on the trailer.
Watched BvS(ultimate edition) last night, and for me, it was a good brain out comic story. Yep its dark, and yes it may well annoy the deep rooted comic book fans, but I'm a regular Joe and the prospect of all the other characters developing in the same way as Marvel has done. Years of fun to come! MArgot Robbie has said she'd happily do 10 films of Harley Quinn... yes please.
I've had my expectations dampened a bit, might not be a bad thing. I can't remember a film with so much hype since, Star Wars 7. I was slightly worried due to the sheer amount of promo they've done for it, lots of trailers, lots and lots of press, lots of hype, I think they've ensured it's going to have a huge opening by buying one.
I've also heard it's not like the trailers portray, but they might not be such a bad thing - if it managed to keep up the crazy pace of the trailers you'd end up with a 'Cranked' or 'Hardcore Henry' type film, a bit too mindless, even for me and we're quick to slate the 'modern' sin of giving away the whole film before you've seen it (although I think this is better than it used to be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwJJkeOTT6Y)
I suppose the one thing that I might not like about it, and this is possibly one of the stupidest things I've ever typed. I don't really like comic book films, I've had my fill, the last ones I enjoyed were the Christian Bale Batman films, I sort of liked Deadpool, the funny bits, the Suicide Squad trailers looked good to me, not too serious, silly fun. I watched Superman v Batman, Lex Luther was good, but the main two... I can't take a guy who flies about seriously, as time has gone on, I've learned that like so many of these things whilst it's sort of a standalone film, it's also a continuation of BvS and will have nods to other films I probably haven't seen.

I must admit that Kermode is the only guy i would listen to as i come out of films with pretty much the same opinion, whereas IMDB of late seems to have some axe to grind, a couple of times I watched some films before looking at it score and really enjoyed it only to find really poor ratings on imdb, watched an Anthony Hopkins jobie yesterday where he chased down Liotta and thought it 7/,10, imdb reckoned on 5, very poor. Maybe the mood i was in, who knows..

On the plus side ...
I can't quite tell (something about going blind) but that looks like the sanitised, digitally-altered-to-be-longer-than-they-actually-are, trailer clip. What you want, my one-handed surfer brother, is to watch this.I've just seen this film and my 30 second spoiler free review is :
The good
The film is paced well, and there is a half decent story in there.
Most of the main characters are true to their comic book origins and have decent screen time with sufficient backstory to move the plot along.
The soundtrack is good and suits the film well.
Harley Quinn & the Joker - They need their own film with or without Batman.
The bad
Too many characters, some with very little to do. They could have dispensed with a some quite easily.
It was a little too cheesey in places.
Overall : a good film with some interesting characters, plenty of memorable moments and a half decent (for a comic book movie) plot. Harley Quin steals the movie, and Jared Lato is good as the Joker(*1).
(*1) I'm not a great fan of Heath Ledgers depiction, and much prefer this version which seems more like the Jack Nicholson version.

Just got back from a sold out screening, really enjoyed it and it seemed most people around us did too.
Margot Robbie was excellent but it was Will Smith who held it all together. Could have been a little more light hearted and absolutely no idea why it wasn't a 12A rather than a 15 (which won't be music to the ears of the big family that got turned away because their kids were underage).
Nearer to the trailers than some of the more scathing reviews I've just read would seem to suggest, I'm not sure how it reviewed quite so badly in many places.
