I suspect that they thought it was allowable because it's not a recognised British English slur, it's an outdated American English slur. Such distinction, or its context doesn't trouble the professionally outraged though.
that wasn't their explanationConclusion at pre-production meeting =/= Post airing explanation once proverbial has hit fan

maybe have a little flash of 'banter' on the screen at appropriate moments to flag and excuse any racial slurs?
ahh but that wouldn't work because clarkson, hammond, the crew, producers and BBC standards didn't know 'slope' was a slur, probably just thought it was a term of endearment
The ironic thing is i'm 33 and never heard the term 'slope' before. I never realized it could be used in a racial context until the easily offended decided to tell me how outraged i should be and why.ahh but that wouldn't work because clarkson, hammond, the crew, producers and BBC standards didn't know 'slope' was a slur, probably just thought it was a term of endearment
Regaridng the special, i can't wait for it as its the only decent thing on over the christmas period. All the good movies and shows have disappeared with nothing itneresting brough in their place.

You sound like a Radio 4 interviewer trying to corner the interviewee into agreeing to something they probably shouldn't/don't agree with.
No, I'm a fan of pushing the boundaries in this overly sensitive culture we live in...
Sometimes JC pushes a little far but we need these characters in our broadcasting world to keep it interesting.
That's my view anyway
ETA - I keep double posting for some reason?!
I like JC - I think the stuff he writes and his presenting style is quite funny. However some of his jokes and humour are a bit puerile and cringey. Forget the "pushing the boundaries", stick to what he's good at IMONo, I'm a fan of pushing the boundaries in this overly sensitive culture we live in...

So far this thread tells me there are some people that really shouldn't bother watching the show.
They're not going to enjoy it, and they will just pull it apart, moan and complain.
Do yourselves, and us a favour; don't watch it!
Unfortunately, you won't be able to not watch it, and will then tell us all how bad it was
