Seems we have a rather mixed camp here rolleyes

One lot in the Top Gear camp believe Top Gear can do no wrong no matter how crap it gets frown Dare anyone criticize the program in their eyes. rolleyes

There are some of us who like Top Gear but would like to see a slight change in format and less of the same ole, same ole. But we are not allowed to express our views because the lot above will be offended and tell us to Fleck off!

Finally there are one or two who really don't like the program, fair enough, but as far as i'm concerned it's still good to hear their thoughts so possible improvements could be made and someone might take notice.

Lets keep the debate healthy people, no need to slag people off just because you don't agree.
HAPPY NEW YEAR.
I like Top Gear but feel it's lost it's focus in the name of entertainment, it's not the only one but they just need to focus on the cars a bit more.

It isn't entertainment anymore.

Say what you like about Top Gear, it's a lot more realistic than Ice Road Truckers.

Top gear special was by far the best thing on the terrestial TV this Christmas.

But the fact that everything else was utterly dire crap made it look good. No where near the best special, didn't deserve a double episode.

There are also those who think they are the only ones who know there is script, support crew, etc and feel they have to keep broadcasting this to those assumed to be of lesser intelligence.

It wasn't the best but still the best thing on over Christmas by a country mile.

Have to agree.

Luckily I had better things to do over Christmas than watch TV but was sick come NYE so checked all the main and the 100s of other channels and there was fek all to watch.

NYE was saved by having recorded the TG specials and a dose of GTA 5 to drown out the noisy neighbours.

PS had just downloaded GTA5 and could not believe how good it looked compared to the last time I played it, San Andreas. I'm 52 not 12 btw biggrin

The Lotus has never been on my radar before but that show definitely peaked my interest.

Mmmm just had a look at the Lotus V8s for sale. Bit pricey for something made out of a parts bin. I had those wing mirrors on my old 1980 Citroen CX.

Most exotic cars are parts bin specials to some extent, how many FIAT bits are there in a Ferrari?

308 Ferraris had a Cortina Mk2 steering rack for instance and Pagani used Benelli mirrors, Lamborghinis have many VAG parts and Astons and Jaguars shared many (Ford) components.

So very true and few folks realise this. There's a huge range of numerous examples from humble Marina door handles, or Metro mirrors finding themselves on so called exotics. Not just small components, the 1.8 Rover K-Series in my son's Elise is the same as that in my "lesser" MG ZS.

It works the other way too. There's loads of BMW logos on parts in my MG ZT. Some of the larger component designs are very BMW like although they do not show the logo.

Many folks here on PH decry the less than exotic MGF and TF for sharing components with the Rover Metro. Even the suspension swivel ball joints are like those ~ the same from memory ~ fitted to my Mini 1000 I bought new in 1970. Having worked on a tired MGF, I am glad it shares so many parts with the "lesser" car which in reality, is an advantage for anyone working on these cars.

I enjoyed these more: the Goodwood Revival, Goodwood Festival of Speed, Silverstone Classic, The World's Fastest Indian, The Italian Job, Skyfall - probably some others too if I think about it.

I didnt like the very ending with the Butch Cassidy reference. They didnt focus enough on the fact that they had to abandon the Porsche, Lotus and even the Mustang, which was kind of sad in a way to leave them there like that.

If your a car/driving fan then its sometimes hard not to like Top Gear as on occasions the presenters do bond with the cars and there is sometimes a real sense of adventure and acheivement on the specials. I think this for car lovers is more interesting to watch, especially if youve been on your own adventures/road trips. There is nothing else on telly that has this.

However sometimes the same repeated jokes and fixed comedy is cringeworthy, even if it does make the kids laugh for family viewing.

Seems to be a recurring theme with TG wanting to prove nobody needs a 4x4, hence the sports cars getting ragged over rough terrain.
There does seem to be something in that. Which is pretty ironic considering the number of 4x4's in the support unit and camera cars.

And then said 4*4 convoy made light work of fording a scary looking river to escape

Made me proud to drive a JLR product did that, massively over engineered for the school run but fit for purpose off road
