Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds on cassette tape.

This was compounded by the George Pal film from the 50's, the long necked spaceships with the pulsing heat ray light.

I was terrified I would wake up and the head and beam light would be at my window at night.

I now love all the war of the worlds stuff, JW's piece especially, but back then I just couldn't listen to it.

OOllaaa!

In the mid-80's (so, i would have been 8 or 9) my dad owned a pretty high-end hifi shop, so would often bring home the latest kit. He brought home a Laserdisc player, and a copy of The Thing (the 1982 version with Kurt Russell) - put it on and left me watching it while he went out to his office in the garage. Needless to say i barely got halfway through and was terrified, and somehow managed to switch it off. Had nightmare for a few nights after that.
Love the film now of course.

My Mum was a Cinema usherette in the 50's and used to sneak me in after school so my film interest began early, probably with movies classified way above my age category. The film that frightened me (I have never seen again ), and can't remember its name was a B+W about the English Army in the Indian Wars. These guys robbed a temple and the Indians got their stuff back and revenge after killing off the soldiers one by one using Cobra snakes.

The bit that crapped me was the last surviving guy got back to England, sat down at his writing desk, opened the drawer in front of him to get his letter paper out to write about his experiences and a Cobra sprang out and bit him on the hand and that was curtains for him.

Snakes absolutely do it for me - No 'Snakes on a plane' or 'Anaconda', and certainly don't need 'Saw / Nightmare on / Exorcist' etc.

Oh, and that Oliver Reed film with the black mamba.... Ooooh got to go !

Jason and the argonauts. It had some damn scary bits. The skeletons, the figurehead, the hydra and this:

It came out a year before I was born so dunno when it was first shown on telly but it scared the crap out of me.

Plus the classic Quatermass that made him turn into a vegetable or something. Again it must have been a repeat.

Quatermass and the pit is still a great classic scary film. The bit where the Sargent goes into the houses and starts to panic is quite worrying as well as the graveyard scene... You expect to see something. Great tense moments.

Don't have nightmares!

The original Frankenstein with Boris Karloff did me few favours as a nipper.

I wasn't too keen on Christopher Lee as Dracula either!

Jaws,
A frankenstein film where victor is confronted drops a bucket and a head rolls out, that was enough for me.
The monster club, the last bit where the bloke in the 911 ends up in that village of ghouls, that caused nightmares,
Two faces of evil, a hammer chase type horror, that really fking g scared me,
Salems lot,
The BBC production of Dracula,
All the video nasties I saw when I was a young adult, frankly I thought they were ste, Evil dead and Texas chainsaw massacre were the most dissapointing film I had ever seen.
All those I've mentioned earlier I have re watched and let's just say they have aged badly, except Salems Lot, I still think it's a very good film, and the Frankenstein one, I have no idea what version it was ( any ideas ).

Forgot to mention.
The Nightmare man.
The legend of Boggy Creek.
Bought the DVDs, they are like the Six million dollar man, best left to childhood memories.

The original "the Thing" it didn't scare me so much as horrify me. still love the work that went into the special effects back then.

One scene in The Invasion of the Body Snatchers scared me though. Right at the end when the last lady alive sees what she thinks is the last bloke alive, he turns to her when she reveals herself to be human to him and he just turns and starts the awful screaming while looking at pointing at her. I think its also the realisation the humankind has been wiped out and replaced completely as well.
This! Particularly IofBS I saw the original version when I was little, really quite worried me at the time.

Quite often The Twilight Zone or the Outer Limits would leave me a little displaced, shame you don't really get TV like that any more.
