Whose the Star in the Reasonably Priced Car?

I want to look them up now so I don't look stupid in this thread on Sunday.

I read that the sales of the Ford Ka plummeted, after Clarkson said that it 'looked like a frog'
I'll predict now that before the end of the year we'll get the owner of a Peugeot dealership claiming that "Top Gear ruined my business!" when he decides to shut it down. (despite the fact it might have already been failing.)

If I remember rightly Vauxhall banned Clarkson from driving any of its cars for about five years after his review of the Vectra caused a major dip in sales. His constant "X-Type is a Mondeo in a posh frock," didn't help that cars sales either.

Clarkson is fully aware of the power he wields and so is the motor industry.

Gillain Anderson, from X Files.

I wonder if this 'Stig doesn't know who SIARPC is' was a dig at some of the people on here, who think they're cool cuz they don't know SIARPC?..

Yeah, It's Gillian Anderson. Who's tiny, rather flippin' attractive, and swears more than Jeremy Clarkson (in a good way!).

Having the odd pop at certain models or brands can be pretty amusing and a good way to make a point ie. 'I'd go this far not to drive a Vectra' or showing the back of the Peugeot drivers head amongst car drivers or Alfas are great but painful to own etc.

Thing is when you ramp it up to a full 20 minute section of an entire brand assassination it just comes across as a complete hatchet job.

Gillian Anderson. Am I the only one who thinks she's more attractive now than when much younger back in the 1990s with the X-Files. Her facial features particularly so.

I don't think she would be particularly fond of you I'm afraid. However, there are reports she is rather fond of comfortable shoes.

I wonder if Clarkson will mention THAT issue of FHM...

Stunningly impressive bike!
Not really.

200bhp at the crank, no bottom end (compared to IL4's)

Shame it had to be Italian & Red, if they had brought along a ZX10R, or, for the ultimate test, the ridiculous fast BMWS1000RR, I doubt either the Porsche or P1 would have seen it for dust.

They are actually. There's a car plant in Buenos Aires.

I've never considered Peugeot drivers to be any worse than any other. I'm not sure where that comes from.

Certainly, Volvo drivers used to be complete fking morons, but that was largely back in the days of the 300 series. They were so bad, I always give them an extra couple of car lengths as they inevitable dawdled along in front of me. I used to live in Harrogate and that was like the Volvo capital of Britain at one point (true story). But that crowd moved on to 4x4s in the 1990s and Volvo's reputation has slowly improved as a result - in my mind at least.

I always imagined Volvo drivers cruising along oblivious to those around them, as if they're on a Hollywood mock up with back projection. A bit like this scene:

I'm a bit of a Pug fan having rescued an old 306 L from a HG failure, and then buying a lovely (IMO!) 407 HDI 110.

I then bought a brand new 208 and it's a nice little car.

They did go through a rough patch but overall Pugs tend to be good cars with good engines and chassis from my experience smile
I bought a 2006 407 estate because I was offered it at the right time for the right money. Although I wasn't looking for one at the time I'd be lying if I said anything else apart from it's been the most reliable car I've ever owned. In the one year & 30 thousand miles since I've owned it the only part I've needed to replace was the brake light switch. I would honestly consider buying another Peugeot on the strength of the one I own now.

I really don't care what top smear or anyone else thinks of either Peugeot or me & although I've never been a hater or lover of the programme I do feel just a little let down by James May. I enjoy some of his other programmes & laughed like a child watching his action man through the sound barrier adventure & always thought he was the more down to earth & sensible one out the trio, now I'm not so sure & am surprised he allowed himself to be dragged into the Peugeot hatchet job we witnessed in the last episode. I don't think he's done himself any favours & has certainly gone down in my estimations.

That's a point I share to an extent. Clarkson, we all expect it now - that's just what he does. Hammond? He's a good journalist in his own right, but whether you love him or hate him, he seems to fit the 'cocking around' template fairly naturally (even if he looks very forced and scripted in the studio). May on the other hand? Possibly the most gifted journo of the lot, and certainly the one who's made the best run of programmes away from TG (though Clarkson's odd military ones here and there are excellent), it's almost embarrassing watching him on the show. It's like there being a really amazing band from decades ago, who everybody loved. They played the music of the time, someone like ELO. And then it's like watching Jeff Lynne start trying his hand at teeny pop, and twerking on stage in the modern era. Like watching someone's Dad trying to dance at a wedding. It's sort of, sad, in a way. May could do much, much better (though probably not as 'popular) with more of his kind of thing. He's very knowledgable.

  • Actually, Jeff Lynne's a bit of a musical god - he could probably pull off modern teen pop, too.

JC's twitter implies than James May was late to work on Wednesday, any reference to that during the recording?

Yeah, JC talked about this before recording started but not so much about why JM was late. I got the impression it wasn't anything serious though. After being told to arrive at Dunsfold at noon, we weren't frog-marched into the studio until almost 2pm. Don't know whether this was a delay from the normal routine.

In my previous comment I was going to mention how out of character it seemed for James May, but then the thought crossed my mind that we only get to see his on screen persona and in reality he might be the biggest hater, storming around the TG production office (portakabin) raging against Peugeot biggrin
