Interesting (and positive) review from IGN here: http://uk.ign.com/articles/2017/03/30/ghost-in-the...

I must admit, I'm half tempted to go back and see it again (in 2D this time) because despite my earlier comments, I really did enjoy it. I do think it could have been so much more (it really was too dumbed down) but it was a good film nonetheless.

Maybe I will revisit the 1995 film again too - it's been a few years since I last watched it.

Edit: The Verge give some interesting thoughts too - http://www.theverge.com/2017/3/29/15114902/ghost-i...

Went to see it in Shanghai last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it, and I'm a big fan of the original. Sure, it didn't scratch quite as deep but I thought the cinematography was lush. Great city to see it in too - almost felt like I should have an Esprit waiting for me outside.

Went to see it tonight with my wife.

She didn't like it, but I enjoyed it.

It's very derivative but i guess the original material is from what i read.

Oddly my wife was bothered she wasn't Japanese whilst the fact that her body is totally artificial seems to make that a moot point to me.

Enjoyable sci fi thriller if you're not obsessed with the source material.

It's more a case that what you now consider derivative is derived from Ghost in the Shell. It came first. smile

The Wachowskis freely admit that it heavily influenced The Matrix, for example.

Also this 2017 film bears very little resemblance to the original 1995 film, and the manga (comic), so it's a little more complicated than that. biggrin

Yeah, I guess that's a fair point.

When did the original Manga come out?

The manga began in 1989 and the anime was released in 1995.

Saw it Friday night - been an avid fan of the manga and the '95 film.. Thought it was rather good. just enough mix and clear scope for a sequel in the guide of the individual eleven or the laughing man.... Can't really go all the way back to recruiting Saito etc...

One negative for me is that I find the 'laaandan brit' agent exceptionally out of character for GITS. In fact I'd go as far as saying I couldn't care less if the character was killed off exceptionally quickly and gruesomely.

OK then, some of the things were probably the derivation (or at least not derivative of what I thought), but I definitely expected the old Japanese guy to say "Did I fire 5 or 6 shots. You know in the excitement I kind of lost count myself..." at one point biggrin

hehe

It's fair to say that the plot of this 2017 film did feel like rather a generic cookie-cutter by-the-numbers sci-fi action flick with just enough of the original source material thrown in to satisfy fans of the original. That's not to say it was a bad film, but it could have been so much more.

If you are interested then watch the 1995 anime film - you may be surprised by how different it is apart from key scenes which were duplicated in the 2017 film as fanservice.

I watched this last night having never seen the ´95 Anime. Quite enjoyable, visually stunning, but not a hugely imaginative story. No spoilers here but there were many elements that could have come from so many other movies.

As I said I have never seen the ´95 version so maybe that film´s story is similar and has inspired several others, therefore making the new film´s plot points seem a little familiar.

But: Scarlett Johansson cloud9

Finally got round to seeing this as it was released on iTunes yesterday. I watched the 1996 fi, a few times as well as the other Anime GiTS stuff.

I loved it! It may have helped that I haven't watched the Anime in years though. I recognised the scenes but quickly realised the main story was a bit different. I thought the visuals and soundtrack were amasing and I actually thought that SJ was very good in the role.

I grew up a Cyber Punk fan after watching Blade Runner at about the age of 10 in the late 80s. This film really nailed that aspect IMO. A solid 9/10.

I'm hoping the Ready Player One film and Altered Carbon Netflix series are as good as this.

Yup. Due later this year. It's in post production I think.

It's been many years since I watched the 1995 anime so watched it again tonight since I just bought the 2017 film on BluRay, and thought it would be nice to refresh my memory of the 1995 film before watching the 2017 one again.

I'd forgotten how slow paced it is, and how much stilted earnest exposition there is. I don't think it has aged very well to be honest. frown

Dare I say it, but I wonder if the 2017 film is actually an improvement. It certainly has gone in a different direction, but it's not necessarily a bad thing.

Following on from my last post, I watched the 2017 film again tonight.

I have to say that it has improved enormously on 2nd viewing. Having the original in my mind far more than when I saw it at the cinema, I've found new appreciation for it and enjoyed it far more.

It's far from perfect, and the plot follows what is now a well trodden path, but I thought it was actually very good and captured far more of the original anime and manga than I had given it credit for.

I also noticed far more nods to the original than I had done the first time round too. Minor things like the Beagle.

I thought the live action film did a pretty good job of recreating the memorable bits of the animated version.

I never really rated the story in the film to begin with. Stand Alone Complex was always much more interesting.

Not as bad as I thought it would be. Watchable but can't say its good or would want to watch again.

Basically a Scarlet Johannson vehicle in your run-of-the-mill sci-fi action film with references to the anime. Actors picked up their paycheck and cruised their performances and couldn't help the Scarlett had, er - ahem, no offence intended - a butch way of walking!

Yeah, it was ok. The spider tank design, however, was awful.
