Stop moaning you lot, it's a good show! I really enjoyed it, and although the flameproof onesie guy knows nothing the general piece about the race was fine. Jodie is much better now, she's only snails pace rather than glacial like the first episode.

Those aluminium Jag e-types were stunning. The F type is a desirable car but I find it interesting what it is about the classics like the E-type that people still love them, whereas the F is just another sports car.
But it is awful but also somehow compulsive viewing.

Second thoughts I shouldn't complain, I had an invite to do a sprint there but went on holiday instead

That's the whole point of the show. They're trying to make classic cars more appealing.

a bit quirky but not a bad sort.

Owns a TR7 yer know.
I'll give him some credit, he does seem to know what he's talking about, and actually have a genuine interest in the stuff he's talking about. And won't refer to a race suit as a flame proof onesie...
Bonus points for having an uncle who fettles in classics.

Its a TV show shown on prime time and tries to appeal to a mass audience so it will be dumbed down in a way that will dissatisfy car people. Not much different to Top Gear or Fast & Furious. High octane found on YT with Jay Leno's Garage, Petrolicious and of course Chris Harris - and most would find them utterly boring and would rather watch TG...

Exactly, take it for what it is and it's an interesting and enjoyable show. When was the last time there was a show with classics as the main topic ?

The presenting is awful to say the least though bordering on comically bad hehe

The daft thing is, Jodie and Quentin were on yesterdays BBC breakfast talking about the show, and she was fine - talking normally when being interviewed! smile

I can't see a second series on the cards. For mass appeal you need to have presenters that people enjoy watching whatever the subject.

He said in the piece that it was his own car but he wasn't going to tell how much he'd paid for it. After hunting around the net, it does look like a shedload was spent on restoring it so I don't know how much profit Quentin will have trousered, even though £203,000 seems to be big money even by E-type standards.

Did Jodie actually have anything to do this week? Surely she could have done the Crystal Palace piece instead of Onesie Boy.

This is a channel that saw all the negative feedback from the car-crash series that was "Classic Car Rescue", and then commissioned a second series. While this show is nowhere near as bad, quality isn't what gets things commissioned on C5.

I thought the bit with the silly whiteboard where she unplugged it was cringe-worthy.

It's a light hearted programme which isn't taking itself seriously, so I don't think the viewer needs to either.
It would be ideal to have on in the background on a Sunday morning whilst you're reading the papers and having a cuppa.

I would wager that Mr Best didn't even know motorsport occurred at Crystal Palace until sent there to film this.
That's pretty much what he said in his closing lines.
To say he's not a car person I think he did well. He looked very nervous at the driver's briefing but was thoroughly enjoying himself at the end.

The line about the onesie was clearly a joke.If Clarkson had said it you would have thought it was funny

I like Alex Riley, he's quirky and humorous, but he's pretty clued up too (Spotting the Austin Ant - OK,it MAY have been setup, but I suspect it wasn't, going on the rest of the show).

He did an excellent series on Brands for one of the minority BBC channels (probably 4) a couple of years back too.

I'm with him on the TR7 too - A greatly underrated car and if Count Duckula hates it, so much the better!

Jodi Kidd always comes over as quite down to earth to me, whatever I've seen her on.

QW... well, I can take or leave him, he seems to know a bit about cars, but he always seems horribly self satisfied - That might just be an unfortunate mannerism, though.

M

PS one thing that gets me - I can see the idea of getting the male model to drive around in the 300SL for men's fashion week, but why ask his opinion on cars in other programmes?

Oh, and another, is Quentin's left sleeve shorter than the right to show off Watchfinder's latest stock? (a la Jackie Stewart).

There's a lot of that from some people on this thread. Remember how scripted and wooden some of the interchanges between Hammond and Clarkson are and yet they have people in stiches! I think it's a case of getting used to the presenters. As has been said Alex Riley was a lot better in this episode than previously so give it time.

For somebody who presents themselves as a 'Financial Director' you also don't seem to understand that you don't pay Capital Gains tax on classic car profits.

Sorry, maybe it's the random punctuation but I don't get your point. What are you getting at?

Totally different show. TG is an entertainment show vaguely based around cars these days.

Trouble is, I think the whole classic car thing you either get or you don't. Must be hard to build a mainstream tv show around a niche interest. It would be like trying to build a show around model train collecting or something - "how do you make a niche interest of more interest to the casual channel hopper?". Not sure Jodie is the answer, nor are the wooden links and gimmicky "pretend car computer" thing (surely only 10 year old boys believe that's real!).

Let's be fair, TG has had some pretty "cringeworthy" moments and same wooden scripting. They persisted with the "cool wall" joke where Hammond would move stuff for years after it was past its sell by date and some episodes are total dross. Everything needs time to settle in but I doubt they'll get the chance.
