My father, who went through the war, passionately hated the Germans. He was very keen that we knew as much as possible about the holocaust and that 'we should never forget'.

It's hard to imagine that every death is an individual person. They, the murdered, have been entirely obliterated from history, in tens of thousands of cases there is simply nothing left to remember them by.

It is harrowing viewing.

Any holocaust deniers out there?

Correct. A smart move which ensured the focus was never shaken from the subject matter.

I can't think of any commercial entity that would pay for an advert slot for this programme. Advertising in this context would be inappropriate and likely offensive. Fair play to ch4 for that one.

Quite horrific obviously, I looked up the medical experiment side if it and, fk me, that's another level again.

Utter depravity. It is shocking to the core that somewhere, in committee rooms and with controlled efficiency, a mechanism so brutal , so extreme, so well orchestrated, planned and implemented this destruction.

Depravity does not even begin to cover it.

Oh yes, they loved experimenting on children in particular.

Separated from their mums and dads and subject to the most awful tortures.

I've just moved to Germany. Was listening to the radio today and they played a few recorded interviews of both survivors and SS officers.

The survivors story was, as you would expect, very sad. The officers story was even more disturbing, "just following the rules"..!

Sometimes, there are moments when you see things that you know will stay with you forever. Watching this tonight is one of those moments. I've watched countless documentaries about the Holocaust, but that was by far and away the most harrowing and visceral footage I've ever seen of what happened. You can't even begin to comprehend the scale of what happened, what those prisoners went through (and even some of the guards I'd suggest) and the motive behind it.

Everyone needs to see this. We're so far removed from the horrors that are happening even today. We, as humans need to make sure that this level of senseless murder never happens again.

It's never been more important than right now that we understand this.

Of course, for those personally involved, then "hate" for a particular Race is understandable. What we as a HUMAN race need to learn is that no cause is worth the suffering of others, however ideological and "righteous" it may be. As individuals, we must not let our inner sense of right be clouded, pushed aside or tainted by others, no matter how numerous or politically powerful they seem.

There hasn't been a single war where "war crimes" haven't taken place. Collateral damage you might say.

(I'm not trying to dismiss it by the way, but when you consider what all these young men saw and experienced it's really not unexpected unfortunately)
It's certainly a difficult one to call. On the one side the guards should have been given a fair trial with legal representation etc so the US troops were in reality guilty of war crimes but on the other hand they bypassed a lot of legal arguements and the guards simply got what was coming to them anyway.
Did you see Freddie Knoller's story the other night? He spent time with the French resistance blowing up trains that almost certainly didn't contain 100% nazi killers.

& yet the guy is a hero and quite rightly an inspiration to many. In war, bad st happens.
They were in the fifth year of the biggest war in history, we are in no position to judge them!
I'm not sure what point you're trying to make with that statement?

I once made the mistake of looking up the medical experimentation that went on in Japan during the war. fk me, I had to just sit in a quiet room for an hour after that.

I have just watched half an hour of this documentary, the bit that got me was the contrast between the idyllic German town and what was just down the road.

Oh course we are, next you'll be denying it ever happened, what a stupid thing to say.

I met one recently, he was one of those 'world Jewish conspiracy rothschilds Area 51 types'. Refused to believe it happened and we had a 'lively' discussion about it. Was not impressed when I told him my British Great Uncle ended the war at Belsen and that it was for real. He then swiftly changed the subject to 9/11 being done by Mossad.

Some people are just proper mental. Chap in question sadly died of cancer very recently, horrible views but I would have liked to have made him see the truth, rather than his skewed narrative.

I was friends with the widow of a Guards officer who liberated one of these camps, and read some of the letters he wrote at the time. I think he was at Auschwitz and the Germans had fled (but it's 20-odd years since I read them, so I could be wrong) and he said that the horror that the witnessed was such that every one of the unit, had they found any Germans at that moment, would have killed them on sight. This was a highly respected officer, professional and experienced soldier, and a personal friend of King George VI, so if that was his reaction I can completely understand the action of the Americans summarily executing the Germans. And after seeing the footage on this programme, I think they were right.

I studied the Holocaust at college and had the humbling honour of meeting a couple of survivors and heard & saw some pretty horrible stuff but there were images on last night which I hadn't seen before and nearly made me switch off. Unbelievable what people can do to each other.

Made me think of that Eurostar business last week. Some guy was on the media having been 'abandoned' in Paris and was loudly complaining that,
"No one has even talked to us about refunds, compensation or even given us food and drink,"

So he was stuck in modern day Paris, surrounded by shops where he could buy what he needed but his main worry was "Where's my money,"

Hopefully he'll have watched last nights programme and realised that some people in the past got on trains from that city with far different things to worry about than not getting home in time for the re-run of True Detective.

But I doubt it.

Truly horrific footage but it's time it was shown.

There was a scene in Fury where the tank crew rolled into a German town where SS officers had hung children from lamp posts because they'd refused to fight.

They came across the SS officer that had done it and shot him on the spot

Fiction or so I thought but after watching this I'm 100% certain it was based on fact, I'd also think it very unlikely anybody was prosecuted even though there were many witnesses

I read Auschwitz: The Nazis & The 'Final Solution' by Laurence Rees a while ago. (Very good book on the subject)

IIRC, less than 10% of the SS involved in the holocaust were ever prosecuted.

It said in this show last night that the Imperial War museum had finished Hitchcock's film according to the script and notes left behind. Anyone know if they're going to show it? I just checked the imperial war museum web site and couldn't find anything...

4oD didn't show adverts at the start either. Still debating whether to actually watch this. Not sure it's Sunday morning viewing.
