Musically nobody can hope to follow John Barry, though there were a couple of passages in Casino Royale that came close (the bit where he's in the shower with that dreadful old moose).
Mrs B and I have seen Spectre twice and both enjoyed it. First Bond film to engage the missus. Seems to be a theme on this thread.

watched it at home last night. There are a lot of subtle touches that are not that apparent at the flicks. Having said that it really is a string of set pieces stuck together. The opening is epic but unecessary

I've not seen it yet but I will probably pick up the DVD at a charity shop and like you, watch it at home.

Watched this last night, totally underwhelmed. I liked it in parts, but to me it was very disjointed, and the plot made no sense. I like big villains, the toys, the birds. Watched Goldfinger afterwards and felt much better,
Bond how it should be.

In the year of our lord two thousand and sixteen ad where a man can feel free to express his description for women in whatever manner he pleases.
Before you know it he will be tuning into carry on films and chortling along with Sid James and saying things like "touch it stroke it and undress it" while stood in the counter at Beaverbrooks if you don't stop him.
Best report him for being non PC and piracy ...... oh hang on about the second bit smilesmile

Well, got about half way thru and had enough. The worst Bond film by a country mile and one of the most boring films I've seen in a long time.
If this is the best they can come up with maybe it's time 007 was retired

At least for a while maybe.
THe producers are so lacking in vision and creativity.

Bond needs a rest...I think though, that the next outing will be soon and just the same as Skyfall/Spectre serving up the same old worn-out, thread-bare formula that they have resurrected from the 70s...oh dear.

whilst I kind of agree with you, the real problem here is a total lack of credible plots.

I read an article in Empire magazine years ago...probably near the time of the reboot.
They loaded up several 'new' plots for Bond...all of them were amazing.
Off the top of my head here are a few;
Base the whole thing in London in real time
Base it in the 50s/60s
Make Bond the bad guy.

Pretty much...throw away the stupid gadgets, the travelogue, the scenes that serve no story just there for explosions. Make the story real and engaging and new, not just a collection of poor fights and jumps, like Bond became. But no-one has the balls to do that with Bond, the franchise could be sop exciting, and yet, it's so boring.

I'd like to see all of the above.

But how would sony get their 20 minute advert into the film if it was set in the 50's?

I cant think of a worse film for product placement then james bond, Its embarrassing. The equalizer with denzel washington is the only thing that came close and surprise surprise thats also sony.

That was perfect.

Expect the next one to be broadly similar.

Totally spot on. Watched this last week with the wife. At the end, we looked at each other and both said "that was terrible!". Plot was poor, the bad guys were underused and bond just looked bored all the way through it.

I watched it again t'other day. The same things riled me as they did in the cinema, but this time i questioned this plot inconsistency: The SPECTRE board meeting's tedious agenda involved assigning a new assassin to kill "The Pale King" (Mr White).

However, when Bond finds Mr White hidden in his secret room, he tells him that he'll be dead any day now after being poisoned by SPECTRE who put Thallium in his phone (because he left the organisation)

Which begs the questions... if SPECTRE have already "dealt with" Mr White, why send a second assassin? And if the Thallium-poisoner got close enough to Mr White to put Thallium in his phone, couldn't he just have, y'know, popped a cap in his ass?

I dont work in the movie business, but sometimes i wonder: if the script writers dont notice the inconsistencies, dont the directors? Or the actors that presumably read the scripts thousands of times? Doesnt someone put their hand up early on and say "whooah, this is bks - you'll need to rewrite x & y"...

  • Edit: Oh, another thing. M leaves a message saying "if i die, kill this particular bloke" Was she running out of recording time? Couldnt she have said "...and the reason i want you to kill him is..."

People put their hands up. But then, lots of stuff gets shot, dialogue is changed, scenes dropped, chopped, inserted. 300 mins get recorded, but only 120 mins used. People may think it is sorted, and then it doesn't get picked up in the editing room. Director argues, suit argues, editor argues..etc
For the specific example, that's part of a larger problem where scenes are written for effect/style, not story.
The entire Star Wars prequels are like this. Cinemasins deals with this sort of stuff pretty well.
It's incredibly poor scriptwriting because they are relying on name value (which is being devalued with every st film they release) and special effects.
