Fifth Gear - and any other (car) show on commercial TV that has to keep advertisers happy - cannot afford to bite the hand that feeds it.
How can Top Gear be widely broadcast on commercial TV then?
Because the BBC/Top Gear are not funded by advertisers. When a commercial channel is making the show they have to be aware of the advertisers but the BBC don't have that issue. The fact that Dave repeats it may mean that Kia or whatever wont run an ad during the show wont affect them that much because someone else will, the shows funding is not dependent on that revenue
That makes no sense. If a commercial producer made Top Gear and sold it to commercial channels it would be under exactly the same (lack) of pressure as a Top Gear made by the BBC and sold to commercial channels.
To be fair there's a big difference between being seen as responsible for producing the show and merely buying it in, most commercial stations aren't having an easy time attracting advertisers these days as particularly internet platforms take an increasingly larger slice of the viewers.

I think we should put a few of ourselves forward to beeb as some dream candidates- we'll be car mad sure, but we'll also like our bicycles and lentils and be concerned about global warming. Then once we're "in" we'll turn.

Jodi Kidd is being touted because of one principal reason, she's a woman. And with the BBCs diversity "recommendations" she fits in perfectly.

1.) They get a woman onto the show. (remember the every comedy programme/panel game must now have a woman on the panel "recommendation" earlier this year?)

2.) She has driven a car occasionally.

3.) She's a bit of posh totty & was mildly hot a few years ago, so clearly all the letches on PH will fancy her and therefore will be glued to screen.

So basically the same reasons they hired Suzy Perry to do the F1. The fact one of these reasons is actually sexist will not filter through to the idiots that run the Beeb.

Its even more funny in the USA, every ad with 3 or more people WILL contain at least 1 black person. Very very rarely do you get one without, its quite silly.

And the rest of the world. TG funds itself. The format does not need BBC's money for it to succeed otherwise it would be the only channel it was shown on.

Also where do people think they get the cars from? They don't buy them.

Who the writers are is the biggest question, not who presents. Clarkson, for all the criticism against him, was the mainstay of the tightly scripted programme.
Clarkson, Hammond and May all did most of their own scripts. Richard Porter - the man behind Sniff Petrol - was the script editor and also made a big contribution (as did Andy Wilman). Non of them are returning to new-era Top Gear and may well work together on what will become a rival.

It could work, but it's going to need people who can think independently for themselves, and who have chemistry together. Not sure the Jodie Kidds, Phil Glennisters of this world are going to be able to deliver on that.

Some of the humour on TG was painful to watch/listen to.
I'd like whomever they get to be really good...it'll have to be a good mix.

Perhaps he's not such a bad choice if he could be given his head.

The ambulance episode in the last series was the lowpoint for me, along with the Peugeot piece - the Peugeot drivers gag was funny once, not for 15 minutes.

Except Farage is back after they refused to accept his resignation.
