What podcasts do you listen to?

I'm addicted to podcasts - they've completely changed my commute into something more bearable, with the bonus of learning new things from time to time.

I've spanked This American Life, Start Up, Planet Money, invisibilia, The Tim Ferris Show, Serial etc.

Any good recommendations?

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History, the Wrath of the Khans stuff is epic.

Joe Rogan Experience. I like Richard Herring, but I'm that way. Marc Maron WTF has gone of the boil in the last few years but still good, The Bugle, Answer Me This, R4 comedy stuff, Philosophy bites, Sean Hughes Under the Radar, Pappys Flat Share Slam down and Bunces Boxing Hour from ESPN, there my must listen to every week.

I like Podcast too, I have my cans on most of the day whilst working, I find it hard to concentrate with out them on.

Joe Rogan, though it's very guest dependant
Nerdist
WTF with Marc Maron
Opie and Anthony (the older ones, it's rubbish now)
The art of Manliness
The Bugle
Infinite Monkey Cage
Bill Burr's Monday Morning Podcast
BBC Friday Night Comedy
The Smoking Tire
Ricky Gervais (not done any new ones for years, but the old ones are great, almost as good as their XFM show)

Covers me for most stuff.

John Gaunt former LBC and TalkSport contraversial 'shock jock' is back - download from Itunes.
Very non-PC - probably a bit right-wing for some, but funny and thought provoking.

Freakonomics (as mentioned above) is good and I enjoy Good Job Brain, lots of fun facts and quiz style questions.

If you like movies and tangents then The Flophouse is a fave, along with the now defunct (but easily finadable) Yeah, It's That Bad have always kept me laughing!

BBC do a lot of podcasts but can't say I listen to them. If a football fan then The Guardian's podcast is by far the best one out there.

Perfectly timed thread. I get through hours of podcasts each week and I'm running out. smile

I've been trying not to fall into the trap of a limited world view so I've been looking for some sources of views that'd challenge my own. When I was really running low I downloaded some creationist podcasts out of curiosity. Although they're amusing they just make me sad. I gave up on that and have been listening to the Surviving Scientology podcast recently by people who escaped that particular cult. It's fascinating.

The BBC comedy ones are a little tedious but there are some good documentaries.

Some others I listen to:
Skeptoid - a nice counter to various mystical nonsense and conspiracy theories
How Did This Get Made - discussion about crappy films. Often funny.
Gareth Jones on Speed - absolutely essential for petrol heads (can't believe it hasn't been mentioned yet).
Nerdist - The Arnie interview is brilliant

And endorsements for others mentioned:
The Bugle
Anything by Richard Herring, particularly RHLSTP (rhlstp)
Infinite Monkey Cake (they don't do anywhere near enough of these)
Pappy's Flatshare Slamdown

I had to give up on this one. I've noticed that a lot of Americans seem to be obsessed with therapy and pseudo psychology and Maron started to get on my tits with the relentless self-analysis. I know he's had his problems but it got a bit tiresome listening to him trying to figure himself out.

The Joe Rogan Experience - but as someone else mentioned, very dependent on guest

How did this get made - some loud american comedians rip a film apart - I find it very funny to the point that I'll actually check ahead and watch the movie they are planning to talk about if I haven't already.

No such thing as a fish - QI elves own podcast. Very funny and interesting

The Bugle

Penn's Sunday School - Penn from Penn and Teller - very funny if you're a libertarian atheist.

Tech News Today
This week in tech
Security Now
MacBreak Weekly - all these are from the Twit network and a bit geeky

Motor Sport Magazine Podcast - monthly - should be daily.

The Life Scientific is very good, Jim Alkeli interviews people about their life in science, some that really don't sound like they'd be interesting can often turn out to be fascinating.

Little Atoms is good too, interviews with authors about science based books.

The Bugle : Took me a number of attempts to get into it but then became essential, although I have a nagging suspicion it might be stopping soon given John Oliver's rising work levels and the sporadic new episodes. The whole back catalogue is available from the Bugle Archive site.

Distraction Pieces with Scroobius Pip : Becoming essential in my weekly rota.

Frank Skinner : Consistently funny, nudges the boundaries considering it goes out 'live' on a Saturday morning.

Kermode & Mayo : A film review show (but is it really about films?)

Comedians Comedian : A comic interviews a comic about comedy. Interesting if you like the comedian involved, can be a bit naval gazing if you don't like comedy industry.

Word Podcast : Focuses on old rock music and related stories. Like ear wigging in on a conversation between old mates.

Slate Culture Gabfest : Gentle, intellectual mediation on a variety of culture. Very American bias but the three usual hosts have a great broadcast relationship and you will learn things. These are smart people and I like being the 'stupid' listener.

Slate Working Podcast : A random person is interviewed about their daily working life. Simple concept, but interesting if you like learning about people/society. Some interesting guests in there, the recent one about the UN representative is a good jumping off point.

Motorsport Magazine : If you like motorsport, they have some interesting guests with mainly a historical viewpoint. Not very slick or fast paced!

Midweek Motorsport : From Radio Le Mans. Again you have to like motorsport but if you do, this is the only podcast you really need. Their F1 insights remove the glossy rubbish given by other F1 outlets such as the BBC F1 podcast, and have a huge interest and insight into sports car racing. Another example of a hugely knowledgable bunch of mates chatting.

Gareth Jones On Speed : Humorous chat about cars and F1. Features Sniff Petrol himself, the real force behind modern Top Gear.

Steve Lamacq's Roundtable : 6Musics new single review show. Good if you like something to recommend you new music or keeping in touch with 6Music type artists.

Nate Lanxon's Tech's Message : Old host of the Wired podcast now has his own show. All about technology. Still finding his feet a bit but he is a very keen and knowledgable presenter and if you like geeky tech stuff, it is worth a listen.

I love them, they obviously take up a lot of my life!

Car Stuff from the How Stuff Works stable is very informative and entertaining, if not a little U.S. Centric. The output is plentiful as well which is great if you have several 140mile commutes each week as I do.

Also enjoy Justin Moorhouses podcast which is a good insight into the life of a stand up as well as all things Manchester.

My favourites are:

Kermode and Mayo Film Review - "Not without its flaws". Also Kermode Uncut video blog.
BBC R4 Friday Night Comedy - Wish they'd podcast some of the other 6:30pm comedy shows
The Spectator Podcast - The View From 22
Radio Free Delingpole - Funny and insightful, unless you're a leftie

Some good suggestions on here, I'll give a few of them a go. Just realised that I used to have the standard Podcast app on my iPhone (mostly for Infinite Monkey Cage), but haven't got anything on the Android phone now. Does anyone listen to podcasts on their Android phone? There seem to be a few different podcast apps on the Play Store, most of them for a few dollars each. So, podcast player, or does the standard Google Music or whatever player do podcasts?
