Just imagine how different (and most likely weaker) the film would have been if the mechanical shark actually worked like it was supposed to

No thanks. Michael Caine must've have had a few bills to pay when he got involved with the Revenge

Strangely I can't remember if I had ever watched the film on video at home before going to Universal Studios and experiencing this:

Scared the hell out of me!! (I think I was only 8 or 9)

For what it's worth the Jaws ride was utterly fantastic, it was a shame that Universal had to make it a bit tamer as it was deemed too scary for some little kids. It was the burnt shark at the end of the ride that was most gruesome which got redesigned.

The head in the boat always gets me. Watched it a couple of weks ago.

Best of the modern shark films has to be Deep Blue Sea.

I saw Jaws in the cinema, aged 8. It was hyped, but I wouldn't say it was overly hyped. Jaws was probably the first true modern blockbuster; an "event" movie that everyone was talking about.

I wouldn't say it scared the st out of me, but I thought it was fantastic, and all the kids at school were drawing shark attack scenes for ages afterwards.

It still stands up today as a masterful example of storytelling and directing. In my top ten of all time.

Jaws is a bit like Alien, where the actual monster is not seen until a long way into the film.

Love both of these.

Lots of sharks are killed to "protect" people. On and around beaches etc. And many are hunted as well to "protect" people.

People didn't just run out and start killing foxes after watching the fox and the hound.

When I watched pokemon one day hung over to fk I didn't go out looking for a peakachew so I could battle my mates bulbasore down the park.

But the phenomenal popularity of the movie also helped the study of sharks, researchers say. Before Jaws, very little was known about the predators. After the film's release, interest in sharks skyrocketed, resulting in increased funding for shark research.

The old scientist in me reads that quote.

More interest, more funding, better documentation of kills and populations.

I don't for a second believe anyone saw jaws and thought, i'll land this bird but it aint gonna be pretty".

people have killed sharks for thousands of years, you could argue that with the influx of large scale commercial fishing it is a likely cause of the sharp increase, rather than the movie.

I remember watching an interview where Spielberg said basically they didn't have the budget for a decent model shark, so they had to rely on the implied danger of the shark a lot more than planned, which of course is what made it such a good movie.

But is it as a result of the film (which appeared to be your assertion).

I think it's a genuinely brilliant film, perfectly executed from start to finish.

When I was little my folks would let me watch up to the first kill, then send me to bed.

No sleep for me yikes

When I was a bit older they let me stay up to watch the head in the boat, then send me to bed!

Really no sleep for me! hehe

Eventually I was able to see it all the way through, one of SS' best, not quite Close Encounters but fantastic nonetheless.

Can't see it did anything to affect the global shark population that wasn't already happening.

LOL ^^^^

I remember camping out in my mates back garden with a couple of friends. We must have been 11/12 at the time and his parents put a portable TV in the tent with us.

Alien was on that night.......really really no sleep - and one lad actually went home half way through the night because he was so scared biggrin

i remember being in line one saturday evening, me my dad, my mum and sister waiting to get into the abc cinema in Leeds to see this. It for me was a pivotal moment in my life , well jaws star wars and close encounters and for some reason the spy who loved me... It was Jaws that made me think as a kid i want to make big monsters... years and years later it came to fruition. for the igniting a spark in me alone i will always have a soft spot for the movie. the later anniversary dvd has a great documentary i think called memories of marthas viynyard, that is a must watch for anyone who loves the films.

There was a short quote

"Burgess says the movie initiated a precipitous decline in U.S. shark populations, as thousands of fishers set out to catch trophy sharks after seeing Jaws. "
