Top Gear is now dead. The BBC will just be making a bigger mistake recreating it with a different team.
Top Gear is a huge brand, and a show that has been recreated all over the world. I'm sure they will be able to rustle something up. Personally I think the timing is good...

Why can't people envisage a car programme that isn't Top Gear?

It may be hard to believe but there are other engaging people in the world apart from those three.
You need only look at Fifth Gear to see what happens if things are more factual. Now lost, somewhere, on the History channel.
And, no disrespect to Quentin because I like the guy, the classic car show. That's tried to be different to TG without being statistics boring and hasn't worked that well yet.

That's exactly the point I was making. It doesn't have to be the Top Gear of the last ten years.

There are far, far better YouTube channels for your average Petrol(Piston)Head than TG ever has been if you're interested in all things automotive.

TG turned into Ant and Dec for a Sunday night with some cars. The focus was (and undeniably successfully) on 'entertainment' and associated hackneyed buffoonery. Sadly they lost any semblence of authenticity years ago. Care to find me a framegrab of a decent powerslide where any of the 3 'star' presenters are visible at the wheel for example? Convenient screen glare abounds. Don't get me started on the various 'races' either. Entertaining? In a very low brow sense, to many it obviously was. Authentic? No.

The presenters all made a ton of cash and thought they were untouchable due to the popularity of the show. But a line got crossed and there's little or no recourse from it.

It no doubt leaves a bit of a void at Auntie Beeb - but I expect they will fill it with some dreadful PC nonsense.

Clarkson and team have had a long run and been extremely successful, but I do feel that they were past their best. Maybe the BBC can make Topgear work with a new cast but there is a very big chance it will fail and everyone will claim it's the sacking of Clarkson that's the reason, rather than a format that has been done to death.

I've never heard of Chris Harris. Will google him..
I think he used to be motoring journalist. I read somewhere that these days he write press releases for various German manufacturers, but I'm not sure how true that is.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but can they keep sniffpetrol? If so, they have a show.

Sniffpetrol is Richard Porters who, whilst a writer for TG, is (I believe) completely independent.

He's about 100000000 times funnier too.

Oh dear god no. Cant stand the guy, top gear worked because of the 3 presenters yes it was getting old but was always increasing in audience so something was working right. If it comes back as a motoring show again it will go the same way as fifth gear ie backwards into the depth of the history channels.

The best thing for the bbc to do is sell the brand and let someone else or the other 3 to run it.

Top Gear isn't just three presenters. It is one of the best produced and post-produced programmes on TV. Some of the editing is unsurpassed on a tv show.

Imagine that with some different presenters. Those three were getting pretty tired anyway. There is a reason that their contracts were not renewed sooner. I have to say, some people need a bit more vision.

Guy Martin is a shoe-in anyway..
Ooo....I hadn't thought of him. He's charismatic and knowledgeable too. I've heard he's quite good at going fast, as well smile

I think Chris Evans would be good, but apparently he's ruled himself out of it.

Can't help thinking JC just got bored with it! And he got arrogant so not such a big loss really.
But back in the day he was so much better than William Woollard explaining boot space and cup-holder sizes, as well as Quentin Slippery Wilson - "what do you mean the car is clocked........."
Believe he got nicked for that (Shame) laugh
I cannot bear to watch the classic car programme he hosts. Tcensoredt!
Wheeler dealers is better despite the "well-built company director" presenter's presence.
Most of what I have seen of Chris Harris's videos are great - the 2CV, his own M5, Ferrari trip to the bakers in his pale suit, etc. but it isn't Top Gear, it probably appeals to PH'ers but not so much the general public.
Maybe CH could present a programme on BBC3 for serious enthusiasts on something like BBC3?
James May is also good but the shorty is frankly a waste of space.
So yes, I do think CH would be great on TV but just not on a cobbled-up TG replacement!

It'll be interesting to see what the BBC come up with in order to retain the millions of world-wide viewers.

Seeing as the schtick was 'idiot schoolboys', I'm struggling to think what the alternative options would be; 'Intelligent schoolgirls'? Actually - that would be worth watching.

Top Gear isn't about sensible or practical nor rational. The appeal was that the presenters were... presented... as middle-aged slightly uncool men who could talk enthusiastically about cars and got to indulge in supercar larks. They sort of blokes you might come across in a country pub.

I would imagine the BBC would want that unassuming 'everyman' approach again. Chris Evans would fit and he has the knowledge and passion, so there's your main host. Guy Martin obviously has no fear and bags of enthusiasm too, so that's the Hammond role filled. And why not Vicky B-H to balance it all out? All capable; all with previous experience and all watchable.

Having said all that as much as I liked Top Gear, over the last 3 years it's gone from unmissable to unwatchable (at times). If it never returns I won't shed a tear and the old ones are on an infinite loop on Dave should I feel nostalgic.

Likewise if you like his stuff then great, but the constant fawning over him on here is a bit weird really.

He's so wooden it's like watching an oak table.

OK he can drive a car but the required charisma and appeal is non existent for me. I don't understand why half of PH start fapping themselves off as soon as he releases a video confused
