Chris Harris for Top Gear
Discussion
TG is a massive asset for the BBC. We will never know the full reasons for them sacking Clarkson.
Given his behaviour in the past, with suggestions of him using racist language, it is remarkable that the corp managed to keep hold of him. The pressure must have been tremendous to make an example. What did it for them was something that they could not ignore. They had no freedom of action. They must have been gutted.
They will try and keep the franchise going of course, but the question is how. The reference in one of the articles quoted might well be valid: Have I Got News for You was largely seen as a three man show with Deaton the main man. The BBC was forced into dumping him and yet that turned out well.
I can't see them moving it on as a factual car show. They've never worked. Further, there are any number of formats out there that tick along. Car SOS, with the highly unpredictable 'working through the final night with Fuzz saying how exhausted he is' wouldn't last on prime time.
There are many highly paid minds looking at what they can do with the TG name, probably at this very moment.
If the other two stay for a season then there might well be a seamless hand-over, but somehow I think not. The show as Clarkson and their marketability will be hit if the show is a disaster without him. I reckon we'll have a clean sweep.
I have no idea which is the best way of going, but I bet there are quite a few ideas being floated. The winner will not be, hopefully, a pastiche of 5th gear.
The BBC will want something saleable, but it won't be easy. Clarksons come along infrequently.
Will they feel a big name as an essential? I bet it has crossed their minds. Evans was my bet but his statement was unequivocable. I'd like to see Jake Humphrey give it a go.
It's a sad time. An icon has gone. I enjoyed his writing style, now copied so much that is is becoming cliched.
It became predictable a few years ago, but it still managed to entertain.
There will be a book on the downfall of Clarkson and TG soon.

Totally. Got bored reading about it let alone watching it.I skimmed it and saw the name 'Guy Martin'. I think he is cracking TV. I'd love to see him stuck into a more mainstream show. He is proper quality TV in my eyes. A genuinely interesting man. Fred Dibnah on coke.
If he were announced as the new personality that a revised TG was to be built around I would be genuinely excited.

The BBC actually needed him. Without Clarkson they now have little defense when it comes to some of the yogurt weaving shockers that the Tellyban push upon us. For the last decade the BBC has been able to say 'yes, we know this is a bit CND mental but please consider the fact that we pay a banker's salary to a politically incorrect abomination'. Now, they can't. Given his behaviour in the past, with suggestions of him using racist language, it is remarkable that the corp managed to keep hold of him. The pressure must have been tremendous to make an example. What did it for them was something that they could not ignore. They had no freedom of action. They must have been gutted.

From a political perspective, they swallowed a lot of Clarkson's ego and behaviour because it was good for the grant.
Sadly, the chap who failed in the basic task of ensuring his employees had hot food at the end of a long day outside has clearly decided to not to let it go as others have.

This makes you sound a bit thick, tbh.Although, I suspect you have missed the nuance of the point. Celebs must be wked off 24/7 by the staff and told that they are very special. You would expect a chap to have made it that far to a senior level on TG to understand his place in the medi industry. At the same time, the BBC has for years, paid off senior celeb fluffers who have fallen down on the task but clearly this chap wasn't to be bought off.

Harris would work very well with someone like Guy Martin (or another crazy biker), and perhaps with a guest presenter each week too, that would be quite interesting: it would be edgy, it would be entertaining
It would be about as "edgy" as the 'Teletubbies' or 'In The Night Garden'.DonkeyApple said:
