This was the last stumbling block for me giving Sky the chop, Sky+ is a great product and once you've had it, it's hard to go back to not having it.
There are plenty of PVRs which replicate the series link recording of Sky without paying a subscription.
I looked at that too, but to get the content I want I need Sky Atlantic and Fox, so it's either Sky/Virgin which is expensive, but come with their own PVR or NowTV which is a streaming service and cannot be recorded with a PVR.

The ideal service for me was ironically SkyGo, it was relatively cheap Online only, but had the benefit of access to everything Sky broadcast including non-sky channels, BBC1 etc, but they'll pulled that as a stand-alone product in favour of NowTV.

Sky Go never carried the BBC channels - the Beeb won't let them.

Sky's CRM tools will tell them if you're worth keeping or not and how heavily subscribed they are in that area.

It will also tell them I'm sure who their competitors are in the area, and what they're charging, so if you call up and ask to cancel talking about some provider that's either not even covering your area, or isn't offering comparable services, then they'll know you're just trying to blag a discount.
I thought that but they always come up with a deal for me even tho BT reception would be patchy (I haven't checked but my aerial supplier has doubts) and the wifi is slow tho apparently we are getting super fast by the end of this year.
that's kind of right, customers are put into segments such as customers who will pay their monthly bill whatever the price is, never phone up, generally just get on with things, customers that have some trouble and could encourage into taking other packages, customers who always look for an offer so when their current one ends they'll phone up, complain and get another one again, and a few more. It also depends on the time & date you phone, I think sky have limits on how many people can downgrade or cancel at one time and can offer them a deal so if you phone at the start of the month and in the morning your more likly to get a deal, phone towards the end of the date or month then they might just have to let you go!

Well, indeed. I cancelled Sky in May......heard nothing since. I've now discovered that I don't miss it at all, but do like having £71.50 more in my bank account each month. The true test will come when the Ryder Cup is on!

So I did my deal with Sky which I'm happy with. Does anybody know if they are still allowed to increase their prices during the 1 year agreement I have with them? Sky has form for this.

Thinking about it as I have a 30 day cooling off period.

Does NowTV not have an on demand service negating the need for recording?

I've got the complete Sky offerings - phone, broadband and TV, and am just out of contract.

Last night (for varying reasons) I switched my phone and broadband to BT. Subsequent emails from BT told me that the switchover date would be the 12th of August.

Then this morning I got an email from Sky telling me that as BT are taking over the phone line, etc, that my services will be cancelled from today.

I jumped straight onto the live chat with Sky, as they should continue with my service until the 12th. Anyway, after a few minutes, it was all sorted.

The guy then asked me about the TV service and said that he'd offer me a 40% discount right now if I want it. So I jumped at it and have signed up for another 12 months. I was going to have this discussion with them anyway, going through the process of cancelling and then hoping/praying they'd offer me something.

So I'm over the moon now, and paying what I had been under my last contract, and without absolutely no haggling. So I'm over the moon, and all because of a 'rogue' email I should not have received smile

I did bend his ear about the price of the Sky Q service, but nothing was forthcoming from that smile

Yes, they did exactly that to me a couple of months after negotiating a discounted deal.

They can do (and have done) this but send you a letter saying if you are not happy you can give your notice.

As above, they certainly can. As also said, you can use it as an opportunity to leave.

Yes, tons of on demand content which is mainly the box sets/tv series. They recently removed the kids stuff but you can get all that via YouTube anyway.

I binned Sky a couple of months ago and I haven't missed it at all. The Sky HD box has turned into the freesat box and I've got NowTV as well but to be honest I hardly watch NowTV either due to Sonarr. I'm only keeping it in case I don't get a Sportsmania sub so that I can buy sports on demand when I want to.

Sky Sports have secured rights to the Chinese Premier League football, may have reconsider my decision to cancel Sky Sports!

Watched one of the matches yesterday. Shanghai Shenua vs some other team and it was actually a decent game. And if you think the rights cost more than six figures then you're completely wrong.

I was taking the p1ss, they make a big deal of MLS and now the Chinese league, both of which are basically retirement leagues.

Yup, no interest in either of those. If I can get set up with decent streams, I won't be touching SS again.

I'm going against the norm here, but I've just signed up for another 12mths. I spoke to a nice Scottish lady in retentions. I politely said the cost was an issue now my offers were expiring and what could she do, within 5mins she rang me back with an 'existing customer loyalty' price for TV on my existing package, coupled with some current offers. So it shapes up as follows:

Half price top level 'Box Sets' TV package - £19
Half price Fibre Unlimited - £10
Half price Sky Sports pack - £13.75
Half price Sky Cinema pack - £4.50

Sports HD pack - £6
Line Rental - £17.40

Total - £70.65 a month

If I want I can add Fibre max for half price (another £5 a month) at a later date. Q isn't quite there for me yet with its features/content, so no point adding £12 a month for that, but again she said I could add at a later date and there would also be discount on that £12 a month.

All in all very happy. smile

With previous retention offers I was paying £58.40, but with no Sports or Cinema. I was wanting to add sports and cinema when I renewed, but not at their usual prices. So when she said they would do half price on all TV on top of existing offers, the extra £12 a month was a no brainier.
