Watching a recent edition (S7 Ep7), and Drew is at "Below Stairs" in Hungerford, a shop I know well and have visited many times.

I can say that, without a doubt, I have never seen it so well stocked and tidy. It's almost as if they made a huge effort before Drew and the team arrived for filming. smile

He's getting more serious about his motors now:

Hoping some car hunting makes its way into the programme in the future!

I've watched and enjoyed quite a few of these programmes, nice to see what they can find. Though I do blame Drew for the fact that it's impossible to pick up certain old workshop-related items that I'd happily use for their intended purpose, because he makes such a thing of polishing up stuff like engineers lamps and flogging them to poncy restaurants for several hundred pounds. And the way that Finchy pronounces "Conwy" irritates me as well. I've got family who were born there and pronounce it with as "Conway" and always have - that's not to say they aren't wrong, but it's what I'm used to.

But yes, generally an interesting watch.

Never realised there was a thread about this until now!
Always watch these programmes, we've missed loads of series but it's now repeating from series 1 so can watch from the beginning.
We used to find ourselves watching it and going "200 quid, for a broken 30 year old school desk that's broken", now we're a bit more clued up and can identify what he will go for and how much the stuff is worth.
My wife has done a few antique furniture restoration courses and she says her instructor would be having kittens if he watched it with the things they do to old furniture. Drew seems to do alright out of it though smile
One thing I really don't get though is why does he have that tacky white luton van ? Surely he'd have something a bit classier with his name on the side so he doesn't look like some house clearance bloke turning up.

Yes, they do some stuff that makes you wonder a bit. I guess if they don't stick "old-looking" shelves into an old cupboard and try to pass them off as original, it's not wrong. I think a lot of their market is going to people who are less bothered about the items being genuine antiques, more nice-looking pieces.

I wonder if the van is just so they can leave it around during these buying trips without attracting attention. I notice on the later ones he's dropped the private plate as well.

Yes, good point, I hadn't thought of that as they obviously stay overnight in hotels etc when on the long roadtrips.

I was in a v. trendy London restaurant/bar the other day (not my usual environment) and moaning about the lovely workbench lamps they had, not being above workbenches. Then I fell to wondering what will become of the lamps when the hipster restaurant fitted out with 'upcycled' old junk ceases to be cool. Will it all go in the skip?

I don't think so. If there is one thing this decade is teaching us is that if you hold onto something long enough it will become desirable again. The price of these things will find their level, but I don't think people will be as quick to throw stuff away as once they were.

equally when the workshop/factory closed would it of gone in a skip if no one claimed them?

Enjoying this series so far I need to catch up on a few since I've been working extra smile

About the van I see hes driving a brand new citroen now

loaned/given from the shows citroen sponsors?

lots of new aerial footage now too prob thanks to drones being more cheap/common as I noticed last few series they reused aerial shots from the very 1st season!

Now, if the budget could just stretch to some new Incidental Music then that would be great. smile

Still going strong, and somehow managing to stay fresh and interesting.

I did have to smile when Drew visited Bruce Crompton of Combat Dealers for a bit of Discovery Channel show crossover. biggrin

There is currently a series running, yes. Although I confess I was just going through "My Topics" under the "My Stuff" link and had forgotten I had started this thread so thought it would be fun to bump it. smile

There is also a series of Combat Dealers currently running, although the crossover episode took place last year sometime I think. Certainly not recently.

All abit formulaic these days combined with the irritation that 'I can only pay £40' then mysteriously appears on his website at £250

You need to consider his overheads, and the fact that he has a team of restorers adding value to the item. Plus, I think you are exaggerating a little there.

But, yes, it is formulaic. Exactly the same formula as Combat Dealers in fact. But I still enjoy it.

He has downsized his operation somewhat.
Maybe antiques aren't as profitable as they once were

Yes I quite agree with your point about overheads. I'm sure the restorer guy doesnt come cheap, I meant more when he gives it to the lads in the back (already on the payroll) who degrease it, whack a bit of beeswax on it and bobs your uncle. 300% mark up and laughing all the way to the bank.

I'd heard that for the latest programmes he's based in a place in Llandudno now, rather than the old sheds out on the Llanrwst road. I'm not sure that will be cheaper to run, though, with Llandudno being a big tourist place. Also he'd got a section of Liberty's in London to sell stuff from, and I wouldn't think they'd be giving it away either. I'm sure there were ads for classic cars floating around as well. I guess he's just making the most of the exposure he's getting from the TV programmes.

I must try to catch some of the new ones, see if anything has changed. EPG doesn't make it clear though.
