I re-watched this the other day as I wanted some brain out monster fighting action and afterwards found myself thinking that AVP is a better addition to the Alien franchise than Prometheus. In fact I found the film to be really rather good. I'll have to watch AVP Requiem next to see how that fares now some time has passed since it's release.

Am I alone in these crazy thoughts?

I think it was better than Prometheus also, but generally not a bad movie quite enjoyed it for what it was.

I enjoyed it too*, if you don't try to elevate it to the lofty heights of Alien and Aliens it's pretty good - it's a Predator grade film, not an Aliens Grade film if that makes sense.

  • It's worth noting I also like Prometheus too, I'm sure I liked it largely because I was busy with a new baby when it landed in the Cinema so watched it 6 months later, already knowing it wasn't an instant classic and with the bar sat nice and low I thought it was good.

AVP is great for a bit of brains out fun. Still nowhere near as good as the original Predator, IMO:

Predator>AVP>Predators(Huge yawnig gap in quality)>Predator 2>Requiem

Prometheus I didn't hate as much as a lot of people did, but it did leave me feeling a bit disappointed and I spent most of the movie waiting for something to happen. I suppose its worse if you compare it to the Alien films, but if viewed as a standalone, I have seen a lot worse - same way that I quite like the 3rd Matrix film in isolation, but isn't even comparable to 1 and 2.

Loved Prometheus, thought AVP was watchable but nowhere near on a par.

AVP2 was one of the worst films I've ever seen.

Predators was better than AVP2 but not as good as AVP which is a shame as it could have been good.

I liked Predators too. Great take on how the Predators get their kicks.

Oh God yes, it was so, so bad. It was so dark you couldn't even see what was going on most of the time, and the only thing I remember was the scene with the pregnant women in the hospital which even for me overstepped the boundaries of taste.

I watched Alien again last night and it really is a masterpiece of sci fi horror. One thing that really stands out is how little you see the Xeno and the great use of sound (or lack of) to heighten the tension. I really wish there was a way to wipe my memory of the franchise then travel back in time to watch it on release. The way the film is set up it doesn't give a clear indication that Ripley will be the only survivor or what the creature will look like. Just imagine the audience's reaction to the Chestbuster scene...........
