Well after last series I wasn't expecting much.

Ch4 seem keen to not over deliver at least they are honest about four folks filming it being proper camera guys.

Three folks wanting to quit after the first four days seems like they didn't bother sorting people's heads out during the selection process.
They said that the camera people were pros in the last series. In fact the sound man in the last series also worked on Top Gear smile

I can understand why they do it, but its clear they deliberatly choose medical professionals. I can only assume this is for everyone's safety. I know they won't have any kit there, but they will a lot more about the human anatomy compared to other people.

I'm also interested in what background the camera ops are. I wouldn't surprise me if at least one of them was armed forces or similar.

Its not the best TV in the world, but I still enjoy it smile I shall watch last night's episode on the train tonight.

All contestants have 2 days survival training, camera men & the medical personnel have additional comms training, medical personnel have full first aid kits with additional none first aid items added. Its only sensible to have medics on the island (golden hour and that).

Survival is primarily about the mental challenge, seeing people leave in the first couple of days is to be expected, with people who aren't familiar with each other this will add a further challenge of the standard alpha/boundary push of a new group of people, a common enemy and goal will see them form strong bonds but it will take time.

This program is primarily about the mental aspects of survival and it is reality TV.

If you want to see some better survival TV have a watch of Les Strouds Survivorman series.

Note that no survival tv program will capture a survival situation (3 reasons, its not real, ratings & of course safety), but they are interesting for both educational reasons and for the human nature aspects (team dynamics mainly)

ETA - the cameramen's background would be interesting, its likely that they are wildlife/warzone/outdoor cameramen some of the shots they are getting are rather good.

It's quite possible that they choose people who are on the cusp, they can flick one way or the other. Grills said something last night about how certain people pull through and reveal something new. Quite possibly some are further away from the line either above or below than others. Some of the people seem sound, some seem moronic, like the girl talking about nails and her bikini line.
Some of the men are absolute aholes.
It's the sort of thing I may enjoy as a tes for myself, but the dehydration puts me off. I don't want s big ball of hay poo inside me enjoying a beach enema. And arguing with alpha-male wannabe aholes would sap too much water.
An Arctic version would interest me...but is probably way too dangerous to do.

Shirley the lack of food will only help them loose some weight!
Pah, some people are never happy.

Meanwhile on the men's island they've just had Sky installed and are enjoying g a beer at the bar they have just built from drift wood and some upturned coconut shells.

I have not seen this week's episodes yet, but I've seen the first men's and first women's episodes. The women really stuck me as a bunch of morons, they plan for finding the beach was about as hapless as it gets.

why don't they do something useful? Half the time the woman at basecamp just sit around doing fk all. Build a fking shelter! Build another one to dry firewood! Build a structure to keep if off the floor? Get a fire going. Collect some water. Whatever. they sit there and do nothing. Useless.

Where do they get the new camera batteries from wink

Are they carrying about 200 of them to last the whole time, or does some bloke come and hand them a new pile of batteries every morning, and if so can't they kidnap him until his mate comes and brings a lighter.

Women reunited and have a beach to sit on, now they should be able to make a shelter (already seen snippets on them making small shelters), they just have to sort out fire, drink and food now.

Men on the other hand have fire, water and first food, they need to spend some time making a waterproof shelter and lots more practice in catching food (laughable attempts at spear fishing).

I've worked with the sound man who was on the island series 1.

The camera cards and batteries are put in a waterproof box and the off island crew come in and take it all and leave fresh ones.

I think this is a decent watch to be honest. Some decent fundamentals of survival but as said above the most interesting thing is social interaction and how they deal with their mental perceptions of their daily challenges.

Its easy to sit here and laugh at people crying, moaning or quitting but thats reality. When I think back to my basic training, my interview selection process was numerius interviews, medicals, fitness tests and took almost a year to start. You had young fit guys crying and leaving within the first few days (one guy didnt even attest!). Some people arent cut out mentally to do things like this (leave family and the comforts of home) and its impossible to know until youve been there and tried it. As your fatigue increases your social skills diminish and you can become almost irrational - known affectionately in the forces as "monging it". Seeing adults crying in fairly inane situations because theyre tired/cold/hungry/thirsty is perfectly normal. For all the posturing you might do in normal life about how physically or mentally strong you are, when youve had days of it being stripped away you're sometimes not sure what to do next.

Good Post.

I don't find the emotional 'breaking down' terribly surprising for all the reasons you state - it's normal. But what I find is deserving of ridicule is the general ineptitude of the people; e.g. leaving vital water bottles to be washed out to sea, repeating the same mistakes over and again (walking in circles), failing to secure firewood and keep it dry etc etc

These are just common sense activities that will occupy you and keep you focused. It's not as if they haven't had the advantage of watching numerous series of a similar ilk that have gone before them...

I don't think they should have the option to leave just because they don't like it.

Medical emergencies are a different matter though.
