Good Post.

I don't find the emotional 'breaking down' terribly surprising for all the reasons you state - it's normal. But what I find is deserving of ridicule is the general ineptitude of the people; e.g. leaving vital water bottles to be washed out to sea, repeating the same mistakes over and again (walking in circles), failing to secure firewood and keep it dry etc etc

These are just common sense activities that will occupy you and keep you focused. It's not as if they haven't had the advantage of watching numerous series of a similar ilk that have gone before them...
You're right, in a genuine survival situation - especially one where you weren't in an area as comparatively rich of resources as those islands - mistakes like that would likely kill you. Their dehydration is most likely the cause for their lack of judgement, I'm sure if they were sat at home on the sofa with a cup of tea like I was, they would have been laughing and ridiculing along with me. Their navigation in particular leaves a lot to be desired, although again a debilitating environment coupled with heat, exhaustion and dehydration makes it much more difficult than if you were dropped in there fresh and told to nav from point A to B. Hopefully they'll learn from the seriousness of the events that happened in those few days and realise that they'll need to pull together and keep the fundamental things going (fire, water, food, shelter).

I had a feeling you were going to say something like that. And you are right of course, extreme circumstances effect judgement...

BUT there was literally no attempt to modify their strategy. I'd like to think a ten year old would think to leave some breadcrumbs to avoid retracing steps (stack two pebbles or bag of sand with a small hole etc) but they just set off again and again... perhaps on the third pointless wander a decision to follow the coast might have been more sensible!!

Truly feeble I'm afraid, a sad indictment of that particular group.

I don't think they should have the option to leave just because they don't like it.

Medical emergencies are a different matter though.
This. Completely this. You sign up, you're there for 6 weeks.

It did nothing to allay my long-held opinion that wimmin have no sense of direction.

Did anyone else have a fleeting suspicion that the "meeting" on the 2 beaches was a set-up?

Yes and no, I have a sneaking suspicion that one of the 5 ladies in the group left at camp is rather sharp, the logical thing to do to look for a beach would be to follow the coast line, it was the right thing to do to find a better site for a permanent location for the 6 weeks, it would be interesting to know if the 5 left a message at the old camp for the exploration group.

It is possible that it was a setup but who knows.

Both the male and female islands headed straight inland when dropped off, but following the coast line would have been a better decision, more chance of food, water, junk on a coastline.

If the coastline is walkable...

They really dont pick the people for their ability to survive do they. Says it all about the show, more emotional stuff for reality tv rather than people doing good at the task.

I dont think we'd get selected to be on it...

The coastline doesn't have to be walkable as such, you can easily stay inland a little and trace it using the sea as a constant bearing.

As opposed to just ploughing inland and becoming predictably disoriented.

We have a friend who got through to late stage auditions. She would have been (too?) good and was rejected...

Watch mythbusters on this. Walking in circles is extremely easy to do if you have no reference point.

One comment I found interesting during the program was that they kept the sea on their right (instead of heading towards it or following it round) and followed it which would have lead to them going round in circles. These islands are quite small.

Not much reference points in dense jungle.

I laughed when they were all like " they are just round the corner here, I remember this bit"

....back to coconut beach.

biggrin

Poor feckers, at least they all got reunited.

I was thinking - couldnt they have tried to 'smoke' thin strips of it to get it to last longer? Don't aborigiones (sp) do that? Even if you can just chew it days later to give you a bit of energy (like beef jerky, I think).

The blokes are coming together quite well now I think. Agreed on preserving the croc meat but the young ambulance medic, the loud northerner and the older black guy I reckon will do really well.

As for the women. Hmm. If they carry on like this they would all die.

Yes they could have, if they knew that was a thing, and how to do it. Most of them have probably had something smoked, but will likely have no idea how simple it is to do or how to do it. Do you know how to do it?

no but I would try, and that's the difference isn't it?

my guess is very thin strips, hang up high off a stick, and make a kind of chimney to funnel smoke up continuously, but high enough to keep heat off. Make smoke by adding leaves to main fire.

Totally failed to get their act together and collect any rainwater too!

Get some ponchos strung out or whatever!

Surely they have to eat the planted piggies by the end of the show don't they? Please?
