No major plot point changes as far as I am aware but it's 30 minutes longer with a lot of that runtime apparently going into more detail about Lex's involvement in the whole affair, more Lois doing her reporting thing and more Superman, oh and not forgetting it's R rated so more violence. Reviews I've read have been mostly positive saying it adds a lot of depth and balance to the story i.e. it feels more like a Superman movie then a Batman movie now.
For those who don't mind spoilers this site goes into great detail on the changes but again I'll warn you it's VERY SPOILER HEAVY.

Apparently it's a mix of small changes for ratings, extensions to scenes plus some extra bits and some existing bits moved around so they make more sense; the new cut adds info so some bits that were chopped about go back to where they were meant to be which apparently sorts some holes out in the sequencing. Watched the ultimate edition today, started off not expecting much, playing candy crush, but turned the tablet off and paid attention for the most part.
Quite enjoyed it, even with all the WTF plot hole type moments. Seems a shame that Lex is essentially used up in a single film.
But any film with superman is going to be at least a bit dull. Can't be helped. Either he is too powerful for his foe, meaning we have to sit through extended hand wringing soul searching scenes, or he is evenly matched, so we have to watch a million shots of super dudes smacking each other through skyscrapers. Yawn.

I never understand comments like this, it's what Superman and to a larger extent ALL comic\superhero movies are about. The source material is basically pages and pages of this stuff. If anyone doesn't enjoy watching this kind of thing then perhaps this isn't really the genre for them. It was too much, no way should doomsday have been there... and its not as bad as spider-man 3 for too much going on and not enough story/charater, but it was still a little bit too much squezed into one film, perhaps we are spoiled with TV serie fitting all the contact in!

But it doesn't do it justice if after the first couple of buildings it's all just the same. Like the Zod fight at the end of superman. It's not an epic battle, it's uninteresting. The Batman fight actually held a little interest, as at least Batman had to fight clever. When it's two kryptonians, it's just super punch after super punch. Compared to other recent super hero films, like the avengers ones, superman fighting is a bit pap for me.

While I did enjoy the Zod V Superman fight I do agree it wasn't as good as some of the Avengers fight scenes. I think a lot of this is down to the fact that Whedon has a really good eye for what works and what fans want so was able to plan\choreograph the fight\CGI scenes to properly show the heroes off. Each of them get's at least 2 or 3 hero moments with slo-mo used in the right places.Compared to other recent super hero films, like the avengers ones, superman fighting is a bit pap for me.
The problem with a lot of CGI fights is that they are too quick as if speeded up or too chaotic so you can't appreciate what's going on properly and who is hitting\doing what to who. This is something that is very tricky to get right it seems as even Whedon couldn't quite pull the same trick twice, Age of Ultron's fight scenes are much poorer than Avengers IMO.

I watched the ultimate edition at the weekend with the missus, but could only see one maybe two additions over the original cut I saw in the cinema. One thing I was disappointed with was that I'm sure I heard that this longer cut added the scene where Batman attacks Lex's laboratory - I didn't see that bit though. Was it supposed to be in or did I misunderstand whatever it was that suggested it was in?

That's what I saw too. Was the CCTV shot added for the Ultimate Edition, or was that always there? I had images of us getting a full attack scene, but it would appear I was wrong.
I just saw this and was in 2 minds whether to comment on an old thread but by chance saw the mark Kermode link on a previous page. I normally don't listen to reviews and I don't like Mark Kermode - but one word sums it up for me which he uses in his review - incoherent. It almost felt like I was watching a film that the TV company had cut sections from to make it fit into its slot.
Really was poor.
