Star Wars: Rogue One
Discussion
Cracking film. A bit dark but mature seems more appropriate. Not at all naff or cheesy just appease to kids and sell toys and more like an old fashioned war film especially with the English guys manning mission control. It makes you question freedom fighting/rebellions and authoritarianism especially with Saw Gerrera held up as the Rebel version of Kurtz.
The aesthetics were brilliant and so glad I did watch this at the cinema as I loved the graphics display for the computer tech.
Saying that I do agree with it being paint-by-numbers SW film but with a different tone and less hues.

No, look. I'm thinking of things like Das Boot, Band of Brothers, Apollo 13, Aliens, The Abyss, some of the scenes in Gravity. It's not enough just for characters to be in danger, they need to act like they are. Or if we're looking more at an adventure with larger than life heroes, Seven Samurai is probably a closer match. The heroes there may not show fear, but there is emotion and engagement, and we feel a sense of loss when they get killed.
It wasn't that I didn't enjoy RO, it just could have been so much better, and I think I've just got fed up with making excuses "because it's star wars".
Not sure I agree with your point about peril. It doesn't seem the point of the movie ie. Cassian's story arc who has done questionable things in the name of the Rebellion who had to be cold hearted at times so if you believe in just cause then you would need to be fearless. Pffft, it's just a movie, no Bothans died in the making of this movie. Christ what an indictment!
I've heard the, 'make him sound evil' direction before...and Terry Stamp getting a stylus, or whatever the fk it ws.
that was a funny podcast
Way back in the 90s, I actually sent a letter to Lucas asking to be in the new Star Wars.
I managed (and I still have no idea how) to get a phone conversation with Rick McCallum when they were at Leavesden to ask the exact same thing! LOL I'm not even and never have been an actor or extra, just took a punt! LOLI've heard the, 'make him sound evil' direction before...and Terry Stamp getting a stylus, or whatever the fk it ws.

Interesting piece here http://www.theverge.com/2017/1/15/14268850/star-wa...
So they did re-shoot some but not the ending. So while it was mooted that they survived they ended up just shooting the all die at the end version.

But you know who's going to survive until the end and who isn't. You know who's going to sacrifice themselves stoically to save the others at a crucial point, so there's no involvement, it's all so clichéd. The best heros in films are the ones who have second thoughts, fears, weaknesses, suffer pain, but carry on anyway. These were just cardboard cutouts.Anyway, Bothans were Death Star 2, not this one.

WHat did he say? Just saw this. Like others probably feel I thought it was a better film than SW7, but less enjoyable due to slightly plastic characters. First part of the film seemed rushed, just enough thrown around to give a basic character motivation then moving on. Best chance of character development was the little bit of friction over killing her Dad.
The way the story moved, though, was great, added a lot more depth to the original film and I loved the way that it ended about half an hour before the next one began! VFX were top notch with the space battles, especially the two destroyers crashing!

Loved it, best Star Wars since Empire.
When the Rebel fleet came out of hyperspace and started their attack and I realised what was about to happen, I nearly wet myself, I felt like I was 10 again, I had no idea we were going to see a battle like this, I'd assumed the 3-4 x wing fight on the "Scientist planet" was it in terms of action, in my mind there was going to be the usual bit of a fist fight on top of something high at the end and that's it.
And the end with DV, blimey Charley, again I'd assumed the first scene with him in it was it
The third act really was insanely good wasnt it!When the Rebel fleet came out of hyperspace and started their attack and I realised what was about to happen, I nearly wet myself, I felt like I was 10 again, I had no idea we were going to see a battle like this, I'd assumed the 3-4 x wing fight on the "Scientist planet" was it in terms of action, in my mind there was going to be the usual bit of a fist fight on top of something high at the end and that's it.

The stand out scene for me was being onboard the rebel ship as it came out of light speed into the area above the gate, and other ships were arriving. I couldn't decide whether to cry or jizz my pants it was so awesome.
Off to IMAX 3D tomorrow for another viewing.
I never got the chance to watch Rogue One at the cinema, my wife hates Star Wars and I'm too shy to go on my own.
I've just been browsing my Facebook feeds and up comes an advert for Rogue One, 'now available on Digital HD' according to the official Star Wars FB page.
Except, it's not available at all in the UK until at least the 4th on iTunes, the Microsoft Store and Amazon Video are both April the 10th.
I'm no saint when it comes to torrents and newsgroups and I'm well aware that the Rogue One Blu-ray rip has been available from unofficial sources for over a week now, but Jesus Christ, why is it easier to borrow a copy off the internet than try and buy it legitimately!?
The film industry don't help themselves at all do they? Why the hell can't there be a simultaneous release across the globe?
I'm off to NZB Planet, I won't cancel my iTunes pre-order (I've spent well over £500 on iTunes movies for myself and kids), but it just doesn't make any sense to my simple mind.

Yep - I hate this too. Same with all the unskippable faf on DVDs. Fine, put copyright warnings on if you must - but at least make them skippable so that somebody who has legitimately bought the DVD doesn't have to sit through them every single time.
Somebody who has ripped the DVD will likely have removed the copyright warnings anyway - so the only people being punished are legitimate buyers.
Finally got to see this, since I was ill for most of its theatrical run. Bit of a slow start, with constant jumping around making it hard to get invested in a lot of the characters, but once it got going it really got going and the final battle was fantastic. The best thing I can say about it is that it felt like it had a reason to exist, fits perfectly into the canon and explains things we always wondered about in ANH, such as why that exhaust port was there and why the Rebels could only send 30 fighters against it. It definitely felt more like a war film in the Star Was universe and I do like how they showed such a conflict isn't just black and white good vs evil. Also that there was no last minute escape or ex machina for the protagonists and they died with everyone else. Will definitely buy it on blu ray
That final scene as well, awesome and brutal at the same time.

I have to admit that I was convinced it would be available today from Amazon Video, as a lot of the big films have been released on a Saturday, rather than the Monday before it is released in a more tangible format.I've just been browsing my Facebook feeds and up comes an advert for Rogue One, 'now available on Digital HD' according to the official Star Wars FB page.
