JC a clever guy sold the rights to top gear to the BBC.... now hes a free agent and can do it all again. marmite love him or loathe him he is a genuius....
Only the % that he owned he never owned it outright (somewhere between 30 and 50% if you believe the papers) and I would suggest that to try and re-create TG may infringe copyright Yep but if he left of his own free will this may be the case - however he was sacked and the gloves are off then it would be very hard for the beeb to copyright a format maybe the name they can and certain aspects of the layout however Clarkson is pretty much a free agent and can get out there and do it all again. be a lot of media agents trying to get them - afterall you couldn't copy right it through the world whats to stop him ? not a lot.

Presumably the BBC owns the rights to things like the name, the Stig, the Cool Wall (seems that was given up some time ago), Star in a Reasonably Priced Car, the use of the Allman Brothers Band's "Jessica", etc. The format of having a load of people standing up in the studio has been copied by the F1 Show on Sky so I assume that's OK.desolate said:

The BBC is a broad church. Our strength in many ways lies in that diversity. We need distinctive and different voices but they cannot come at any price. Common to all at the BBC have to be standards of decency and respect. I cannot condone what has happened on this occasion. A member of staff – who is a completely innocent party – took himself to Accident and Emergency after a physical altercation accompanied by sustained and prolonged verbal abuse of an extreme nature. For me a line has been crossed. There cannot be one rule for one and one rule for another dictated by either rank, or public relations and commercial considerations.

You can't re-create TG in that way there will be copyright issues, I am not saying the trio couldn't stump up the cash to do another car show but in many ways it would be foolish to just try and make a carbon copy. So it may be better or it may be worse. The BBC won't be able to re-create TG in the same way but it isn't a bad thing for all as it was getting a bit predictable and a change as they say is a good thingToaster said:

Not renewing someone's contract is not the same as sacking them. The DG said

The point the poster I was replying to was trying to say there was breach of contract as he was sacked. He wasn't. He didn't have his contract renewed.
As clearly stated in the link you quoted.

if thats not a termination of a current contract I don't know what is you can pick and choose what bits you like but Sacked seems the most appropriate termEdited to say even the papers said he was http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/jeremy-cl...

I don't really know what Hammond has to offer outside of Top Gear. I don't really rate any of his stuff outside of Top Gear. If you read his books, he comes across as his TG persona, which is an angry short bloke.
Don't forget the brain injury the guy is lucky to even be alive.Yes, he is probably the weakest presenter of the 3, but somehow they just work together.
The legalities of it if you know employment law roughly equal a sacking. the company dispensed with his services. Custome and practice and other things apply here - JC would have been making palns for the next series and prep would be carried out to do this. The sudden stop of this is indicative of an ending. there was a future an ongoing relationship here and it ended and it was the BBC that did it. so for all intensive purposes that was a sacking.
what if Clarkson engineered this - boxed the BBC into a corner that the only option was a separation then that would release clarkson from his contractual obligations.
still think clarkson is one step ahead here and he will appear again.

Ruggedscotty, all sensible comments however I think its probably wasn't Clarkson boxing clever possibly a bit of meltdown going on, to abuse and hit a co worker is unacceptable, however he clearly has skills (not boxing) that the 'market' desire's for Clarkson's skills in journalistic writing / presenting to produce another show quite possible as he draws the money. Whether it is a re-hash of TG remains to be seen but and not wishing to get flamed here but maybe just maybe it should just stop otherwise its just all downhill from there a little like Breaking bad it could have stopped a couple of series earlier and would still have been great.
May and Hammond had a great ride along on his ability and will possibly again

I wonder whether Richard Porter's (TG script editor) sniffpetrol article is a thinly veiled criticism of JC's behaviour or just humour?

Whilst I've quite enjoyed the Classic Car Show, Jodie Kidd is a terrible presenter. The "on location" bits aren't too bad but in the studio she doesn't/can't disguise the fact that she's clearly reading from an autocue. Yes, we know TV presenters read from autocues but it shouldn't look like they're reading out the words.
