Big house guy clearing off to India and using that as an excuse was not good enough but then neither was the bloke from the council who bleated "we don't have the resources to police this sort of thing" at one point. Yes you do mate otherwise your entire raison d'etre is in question, if you're not going to get off your bum and measure something then why exist at all. Honestly it can't take more than an hour or two to pop up in a van with a tape measure and see that it is widely out. Shameful.
The council are not going to project manage your build for you. The person responsible is the person commissioning the work. If you can't do it yourself then you pay someone to do it for you.

The councils job is to control what you can build, ensure that its built to the right standard, and enforce things when its not right.

Check this out all these buildings were built by previous owner under supposed PD and while he owned the property the council opened 2 enforcement cases and closed them both times without taking any action.
Unfortunate for him he went skint and we bought at auction they then opened another case and I had to take them all down apart for the garages block built in 2006 (they had been up for 4 years)
The build area was 7 times the foot print of the house
So I guess some chance there luck or something else.

I think I remember reading that thread^.

The general gist of it was your surveyor/solicitor didn't flag any problems with those extra buildings and then the council decided they were going to kick off with the new owner (you) about them. Is that about right?

About right but I don't blame the solicitor as we always wanted to knock half down just never expected to have to knock them all down.
My planner(who was the previous owners planner) was so sure they could stay and got it so wrong.

Nearly sent me mad (again)

Beauty Salon owner is an arrogant, ignorant prick.

What possesses someone to completely disregard what they have planning permission for and just crack on how you feel.

Looks like he's got away with it too.
