I like the spectacle of some films, Avatar for example was awful as a story but looked amazing, Tron Legacy also. But that said I still prefer watching films at home, as I always feel I get to absorb more of what's going on. Anyway the ratio for the size of cinema screens / distance you sit away aren't that great now we all have chavvy huge flat screens.

I have decent projector at home which I use for our weekly movie night at home, I prefer being able to watch a film without having to put up with everyone else.

I went to see Roger Waters 'The Wall' on Tuesday this week and throughout the picture people in the audience were having pizza and drinks delivered, so the delivery people had to use a torch to find out where the seat was and to not stand on anyone's toes. Cinema as a concept doesn't work for me now.

luckily my local has just dumped 60% of its seats to ensure EVERY chair is now a full electric recliner with enough leg room that I can lie down and people still have ample space to walk between my legs and the seat in front (i'm 6ft6)

it has a costa too so I weekly go and get a coffee and watch a weekday 10am showing and am normally the only one there. Even a mon/tues night late showing with the otherhalf has the place with 4/5 couples in at most.

better experience than its ever been and (for the right film) better than being at home (despite the big ass TV)

Good movie, could do with another half hour... The book has lots of material that could have been used, I had the feeling that the toil and ingenuity of the cosmonaut on Ares was not represented enough.
Matt Damon was great for this role , and Chiwetel Ejiofor was very good as well... Jessica Chastain gave a typical damp squid performance...
And we have found out where Ned Stark is after his alleged beheading at GOT smile

Roll on Mr Bond...

Is this worth seeing in 3d - I'm no fan of it so unless its a MUST SEE in 3d.....I'll go 2d!
I saw it in 2D, could only really think of a few places where 3D would have been worth it...but that's my opinion.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. Slightly lacking in the impending sense of doom - he never really seemed on the verge of dying in the film.

Just watched it, don't worry about the 3d, not really worth anything extra.

They did a good job of condensing the book into a film I thought, more could have been used lengthened it, but I don't think it would have name for a better film.

I think longer than 140 minutes for a theatrical release is really pushing it commercially these days unless it's a really big event movie. My local bumped up the price due to the length! I thought it was condensed quite brilliantly, but agree that the impending sense of doom was drastically reduced in the film.

The supposed 3 hour directors cut Blu Ray is definitely on my shopping list.

Just back from this - pretty much think it's been one of the better movies of 2015, Matt Damon can be forgiven for a lot after his performance in this.

Well worth watching - went to our local independent where they still do an interval.

the interval started just on the boob joke - so the audience missed it, apparently it's where the reels end they have managed to do this at some pretty inconvenient places over the years...

Go see it, I think this will break the duck for Mars Movies making money.

I used Watney's method of cutting up potatoes to get a bigger crop on my allotment this year and it worked.

Ha ha . I saw it last night; I thought he should have grown them in bags...far less soil needed, portable, and probably a much bigger crop too cod you keep covering new growth with soil.

Went to see it earlier, absolutely loved it. I thought the end was a bit too far fetched (as is the book) but that's it really. Definitely will watch again.

Saw it in 3D because I would've had to wait 2 hours for the next 2D screening. Not worth paying extra for in this case.

Saw this last night, really enjoyed it, although agree about the 3D being a waste of time.

Ridley Scott takes out the tension of the book and adds pop music; most of Watney's wry humour is lost as well. The book is much more rewarding.

And yes, we know human faeces can serve as fertiliser, they did in this country for hundreds of years anyway. Must amuse the American audience though.

Just back from this tonight. Haven't read the book. Thought it was good but not great. The first half of the film was brilliant, but the second seemed increasingly contrived and full of hollywood cliche. The best parts of the film were just Matt Damon plodding around fixing things and making things.

3/5 from me.

Read the book then. Heaps more of that plus as said above more tension and much more humour.

Watched this over the weekend. Haven't read the book but really enjoyed it. One of the better films I've seen over the last few years in fact.

Good story, thought it was well acted with some very funny quips and looked and sounded great.

ETA: Will have to read the book now.

Spoiler regarding poop

When the all the potatoes died why were they like "all the bacteria has died" "he's not got enough food" Surely all he would need to go is squeeze one out and then start growing more? Unless the H20 creator was too broken too? I guess the book goes into more detail?

You can eat frozen/dead potatoes , but not grow them.
