I've just got back from visiting Jordan. We went out into the Wadi Rum, which is the desert area where they filmed the movie and it is exactly as it appears on screen. The only thing they did was cgi out the desert scrub plants that grow in the Wadi and used orange filters!!
Truly epic scenery and a truly great movie.

Depends on where you are. Near the poles, only a few centimeters -
