I suggested to Mrs Lamb that we take a drive up to San Francisco (40 mins) and watch it in a cinema there. With her deep rooted fear of earthquakes and the fact she is terrified of tidal waves, she isn't so keen! Probably wait for the DVD and watch at home...

There are some quality quotes to be found in the IMDB reviews for this pap...

"I was riveted by many scenes and this is probably due to the fact that the director never overuses CGI"

"The science is exact and to the point"

"it was like a Michael bay wet dream, but a realistic wet dream"

A truly woefully awful bit of disaster porn without even the tiniest grounding in reality. Clearly the Yanks have got over their post-9/11 twitchiness about showing collapsing buildings in movies though...

Every action movie cliche you can imagine is in this film.

But, there is a plot, multiple characters developed, a brief baddie of sorts and the film is in your face right from the start for almost 2 hours. As said above, it is so bad it's good. Reality has to be totally suspended as there are just so many impossible things that they want you to believe can happen.

But in the end it was worth the time and ticket price. Yes, we actually enjoyed it.
Me and my cinema bud were discussing this last night, we opted for Poltergeist. Which was wk. I love the Rock, but this film sounds not very good and he has a history of making tyrd after turd.
The last Rock film that was good was Walking Tall...although I have not seen Pain & Gain.
It's a shame, 'cas the Rock could have been a great actor, but he just takes the 80s route everytime.

I enjoyed San Andreas tremendously. Of course it's ridiculous, of course it's nonsense - but it knows it's both of those things and plays it straight down the line. It was much cleverer than you'd expect (engineer, see) and the cgi was some of the best I've ever seen.

I think Dwayne Johnson is very watchable, Carla Gugino has always been a favourite and Daddario was lovely. Giamatti does a great Basil Exposition with a tear in his eye, and all the disaster movie cliches are present and correct.

I thought the opening intense none-more-crashing car accident sequence was excellently brutal and preposterous and set out the film's stall really well. I loved the bizarre wtf cameo appearance in the restaurant, and liked that Gugino got the best swearing.

More than anything, it was just loads of fun. I really enjoyed it. No, it's not Titus Andronicus, but it's way better than it needed to be and I smiled with glee all the way through it.

I haven't seen it yet, maybe next weekend. As a dumb disaster film, I'm looking forward to it as a bit of fun.

I know Dwayne Johnson bulked up a lot for the Hercules film, but he does seem to keep get bigger in everything he's in now. Compare him in this, F&F 7 or the Ballers TV show coming up, back to something like Southland Tales or Doom, he was big then, now he's fking huge! hehe

Yes I agree totally. Watched it yesterday and was entertained by what it was. Great VFX and classic American cliches.

I haven't watched it but from the trailers it seems like they piled a load of cash into the laps of those guys who do the CGI-falling-buildings-with-far-too-much-debris and sprinkled it with the rock shouting.

The tidal wave too... the fault line is inland no? why would there be a tidal wave coming toward the bay?

what on earth makes you think an ex-WWF wrestler known primarily for having a massive physique is going to start worrying Daniel Day-Lewis in method-acting worthiness? Everything points to the complete opposite.

(I actually think he is quite likeable but fully expect his films to be st, although Pain and Gain is by far his best)

His previous profession has no effect on his abilities as an actor. Though he was quite charismatic, but then so was Hogan, who stank up the place as an actor. The Rock's size does not affect his acting ability, small scrawny weeds do not automatically mean they're great actors. Some of the Rock's early roles were quite varied and he showed capability and the possibility of range. If he had continued in that vein, he should have made good films.
I also never mentioned 'method' which is an overrated technique. Nothing points to the complete opposite, for the reasons above.

I was (slightly facetiously) pointing out his history was as a wrestler (which admittedly involves cartoon acting) not training in RADA or the like

Almost felt like a guilty pleasure, as i really enjoyed, but it's totally formulaic and clichéd. 7.5/10 for me.

Alexandra Daddario has some impressive assets too wink
I can HIGHLY recommend True Detective season one then. wink
Fantastic biggrin

Ahh, OK! Sorry!

He reminds me a bit of SLy. Sly for years did a load of crappy lazy films. He has revealed in a handful of films though, he is actually decent. A shame.

At one point he dropped down to 15 stone and I thought he would branch out, but he then put on massive amounts of muscle (got to over 20 I think) and since then just did the action stuff.
I've been told before that I am 'too big' for roles, it's annoying.

...I've heard that...and I'm mildly (but pleasantly) surprised. I hope it's true.
