Getting a bit OT now but what the hell.

Back in the ye olde times, before VHS, you could get a very cut down version of Star Wars on Super 8 cine film. It came in various formats and lengths from an 10 minute silent cut in black and white to a thirty minute cut in colour with sound! The prices were suitably horrific but as a Star Wars child I lusted after it with every bone in my body.

After many months I eventually I managed to get the shortest silent version in a swap from a much richer mate. Finally, I had my very own copy of Star Wars! cloud9

Thing is, I never did manage to get hold of a projector to play it... rofl

Yup, clearly cue a Jean Luc Picard facepalm moment.

The whole gender swap remake thing is getting really tired.

I love a strong female lead - Ripley in Aliens, for example. And I really like seeing woman taking a more leading role. But the whole "let's remake an old film but change all the men to women" is just lazy.

Having said that, I think changing Starbuck to a woman in Battlestar Galactica was a masterstroke and worked really well. Boomer was more "meh" - I could take or leave that - but Starbuck really worked.

And I think the idea of the new Wolverine being female worked too - with the justification that they could only salvage the X chromosome from Logan when they cloned him so had to double it up to XX (ie. female). I can go with that.

So, I guess I'm saying that when it is done well, then it works. But when it's done as a lazy trope (like a lot of remakes are doing) then it doesn't.

As mentioned in the comments on that Zorro reboot.

By all means have female leads but do it with new things, not changing established male leads to female.

don't make you wrong at all there. Apparently there's a saying that's been trotted out more than a few times recently "get woke, go broke".

All we want is a good film - personally I couldn't care less if it's a male/female lead, I just want it to be entertaining and not yet another re-tread.

Instead of trying to change James Bond to a woman they should have had a spin off with Halle Berry as Jinx Johnson from Die Another day.

Funny this - my wife loves watching Love Actually every year at Xmas and I enjoy about half of it. Around half of the entwined stories that originally made me cringe really grate now. I was thinking it might do with a makeover/reboot to iron out these wrinkles. For example they really messed up the Egg (Rory McGregor) and Keira Knightly story, and that could be better done differently (and with a different actress - and no Boris Johnson!)

But I am a firm believer that the original should be left by itself. Come up with new ideas FFS!

Worth it for Martine McCutcheon and I like to try to spot a friend in the Christmas party scene. He worked as an extra for a while and I have spotted him a few times in the background of films.
