I think there is less pressure on a reboot than a remake.
A remake is generally awful But in line with the remakes mentioned above, The Maltese Falcon is a remake, which is one of the best films of it's kind....like The Thing and Invasion of the Bodysnatchers I suppose, films that are still benchmarks.
COmic book characters and other 'other' media translations work well for reboots.

I too enjoyed the recent Dredd - I thought it was very good. And I thought Total Recall was quite good too. Though, when rebooting something that was hugely succesful not that long ago, you'd have to do it very well.

Robocop was a travesty though. Absolutely awful film that completely missed the whole point of the premise - you never felt that he had lost and then regained his humanity. In fact he didn't even look like a cyborg either, just a bloke in a jumpsuit and body armour.
Several forums that I post on have threads of similar theme whenever a remake/reboot is mooted/released. Personally, I don't get terribly agitated about it, until and if they remake a classic film and destroy all copies of the original there really isn't a problem. In music no-one bats an eyelid when artists "cover" a classic. In fine art many people will copy an artist's masterpiece. No biggie. In olden times storytellers would wander the land selling a tale for a meal and a pint or two, the stories were the same. I think of a remake as simply a retelling of the story, a good remake/retelling will add to the mythos of the story. The late great Terry Pratchett's Discworld was largely made from Narrativium, an element which ensures that everything runs properly as a story. Someone, much wiser than me reckoned that there are only twenty basic plots or stories

Stuck in pre-production hell it seems - some stuff has been filmed - fly-bys and stuff, but nothing with any actors in it.Peter Jackson is the driving force behind it, 'they' say it was put on hold to make the Hobbit films, which are now done so it might be back on - but these films that are on/off/on/off for years and go through production hell often turn out terrible...

I read somewhere that spiderman will be in one of the upcoming avengers films, not sure if it will be a cameo or he will be an avenger, im hoping for a different lineup of avengers (spiderman, wolverine, antman, scarlet witch, vision perhaps) in the upcoming films but Im not sure it fits with the proposed up coming storylines.We will see, for me the current avengers line up has got a bit stale very quickly.
On topic - Some remakes are good, some not so good. I would much prefer them not to make them, but it makes money, a lot of original ideas are getting made into series' by the likes of Netflix, their is so much media around these days that remakes are easy to avoid, their is always something else to watch.

Errr - I do 
Some covers are bland, most are truly horrible (and in fact, some are covers are covers of covers... I give you Maria Carey and you can keep her!
), but the only ones I have any time for are those that do something different with the song .I guess the big difference is it cost a few thousand (or less!) and a few hours (days tops) to do a cover of a song, but millions (tens of...) and months/years to remake a classic film - If it's bad, as most are, what a f
king waste of time and talent (I guess not money, as that simply moves from someone to someone else).M
