Just wondered if anyone else has seen this and what you think? There's some quality players in the first auditions so think there'll be some mileage in future viewing. Nice to see the variety of styles being represented, really enjoyed some of the classical stuff even though there's solid rock mixed in with the petrol in my veins!

If you haven't seen it then it would be worth checking out, episode 2 is on Tuesday at 8pm on Sky Arts channel.

Caught some of this yesterday, the antithesis of Britain's got Talent. Some scarily talented guitarists, though I'm not keen on the 'percussive acoustic' style: if you want to bang something buy some drums. I think I'll make an effort to watch the rest of the series, though if anyone trains their Border Collie to pick up a Fender, ahm oot!

Just caught episode 1 on catch up.
Some seriously good players....although what do I know as someone who can only just knock out smoke on the water smile
The guy who did Eruption by Van Halen,I couldn't distinguish that from the original.

I don't know if it's going to be fair choosing 4 from each category when some categories are likely to only have a few players in them and others loads

despite the fact I play rock blues and metal I thought the classical players outshone everyone.

i still cannot get into jazz either....

Niiiiiiiiiice tongue out Jazz doesn't work for me either plus I don't see any particular playing skills above and beyond the other styles (appreciate they might be experts in odd time signatures or peculiar chord modes though).

Enjoyed the auditions and will now be interesting to see what challenges they come up against under their mentors.

Caught the 'rock' semi final tonight - made me wonder what they were looking for - the lad who I placed last actually won! He was running all over the stage but was very repetitive and not nearly as technically not musically as good as the others...

I thought he'd win actually.

All that fancy shredding is all very well, but they looked like they were playing Rocksmith rather than putting on a performance.

I thought it was a mistake to pick Alfie over Martin but Hughie has had a hard-on for Alfie since the moment he saw him.

I can't stand the kid. Loves himself way too much.

Shredding does nothing for me.

In the first audition he reminded me of Alex Lifeson. Second audition, not at all...but then most of them were much of a muchness.

But Alfie has more potential than the others IMHO.

Agreed - was looking forward to the Rock episode and was ultimately disappointed. Actually really liked Ben but he was a bit introverted. Shame that they all seemed so keen on displaying their shredding technique when some quality playing from the heart would have stood out from the crowd.

Helen Sanderson - Oh yes indeedy cloud9

So, someone want to tell me what happened to the rock kid between last weeks Abbey Road sessions program and this weeks Latitude finals. Didnt hear any mention of the fact that he wasnt there? Or did I miss something?

I wondered about that too. Maybe he died.

The four from the semi finals got whittled down to three for the final - Alfie was deemed to not be up to it from a technical perspective by Nitin and Helen (Hughie was still a fan) compared to the other finalists so he didn't make it to the final at Latitude. Seemed like a good decision IMHO.

Glad the winner was Gary as he seemed to be the best all round choice. Strangely, the series seemed a bit of an anti-climax and wasn't ultimately as enjoyable as I'd hoped it would be. Would love to be able to play as well as some of those who appeared on it though smile

Well, I got all that (and agree although one of the others might have made it a bit more of a fight in the final) but it wasn't 'announced' on the programme or was it? At the end of the Studio programme they were discussing his lack of technical skill but then he just didnt appear in this weeks prog. That was what I was getting at - I seemed to miss the bit where he was let down gently . . .

You are spot on, sorry didn't intend to tell you what you already knew! It was odd that they didn't put closure on that bit in the final episode, rather than just showing the 3 that got through but that just seemed typical of the production of the series. It was poorly put together overall - so much repetition of the premise and where they were playing, actual content was only about 75% of the broadcast.

I thought that performance of the Fleetwood Mac song was stunning and original and beautiful. It was a close thing but as I said earlier th ed classical players outshone th ed others.

Superb performance from the winner.
