I say give Chris Evans a chance, at least three or four episodes until he gets in his stride.

The "old" Top Gear is dead...(The format was tired anyway)...Evans certainly will freshen it up.

Good luck to the other three, I'm sure they won't starve.....

Thing is, outgoing TG is often likened to a well known entertainment team format of the King of the Castle (JC) accompanied by his wizard (May) and court jester (Hammond).
Evans is too much the court jester to be King.
????????????
It's a well known set up.
The main character, with two opposing personalities to bounce off.
Star Trek had Kirk, Spock and Scotty.
Dad's Army....Capt Mainwaring, Sgt Wilson, Cpl Jones.
Last of the Summer Wine....Foggy, Clegg and Compo.

Well, to say I'm shocked would be an understatement.

Chris Evans is the last person I'd expect to have a sex change. BBC kept that one quiet.

Not surprised, was the only choice really. Not sure it will work though as the show is funded by international sales. Clarkson et all are worldwide stars through this show, they are in fact this show. In order for the beeb to continue to lavish the budget that TG has enjoyed to date they need to sell it abroad, no one though has ever heard of Evans outwith our own shores and it will therefore be a very tough sale. They will give it the three seasons, if the sales do not follow and it only gains a few million domestic viewers then they will can it as production costs are huge. They will also have to contend with Clarkson, May, Hammond making a rival show, no doubt through one of the big international production houses, the people that bought TG are far more likely to buy this as its an easy sell with the well known names and trusted banter already in place.

In the meantime though we get 2 big budget motoring shows to watch, that can only be a good thing. My money is on Clarkson's, no doubt soon to be revealed show, to be the winner in the end. As the highlander once said, "there can be only one"

Loved Top Gear for many years, but despite the odd genius moment I thought the format had generally gone past its sell by date at times.

Evans picked up Sir Terry's mantle and I have to confess I thought oh no, but he's shown what he can do.

I agree with a number of suggestions 1st get Jodie Kidd she's pretty gorgeous. Guy Martin's daft enough for any escapades. Could just work... Look forward to it.

What we could do with is a bit more Tiswas for Children of all ages!

One problem with that.

Guy Martin doesn't like being in front of the camera.

Racing drivers are boring. More important that the token woman is funny and has some insight into road cars.

I don't know why some people don't recognise his rather obvious Asperger's/autistic spectrum symptoms, it's not exactly mild. Doing something like Top Gear would be hell for him.

Would love to know who the haters wanted...?

Most people in the TG comments thread on Facebook want Clarkson or nothing..,nobody was ever going to be the 'right' choice were they? I remember May getting a ton of abuse for quite some time when he started.

Evans is a tt, ruined R2 and I'm sure he will ruin TG as well.
So getting the highest ever ratings on R2 means he ruined R2?
I'm not sure it's Evans who's the tt here...?

Clearly this thread is going to turn into a typical PH moron-fest. Shame really rolleyes

Are you sure? He's been in front of them rather a lot in the last year or so!

The latter TG years were a wobbly stack of st pantomimes punctuated with the occasional interesting section or vaguely amusing "special".

If Evans can articulate a love of cars with a bit of intelligence and humour good luck to him and his co-presenters. I'll tune in.

If the Clarkson fundamentalists want to throw themselves on the floor in a big huffy tantrum they're free to do so.

I was watching the TFI Friday last week and thought that could easily be the Top Gear set. It's perfect really.
A manic Pub type studio is Chris Evans style - I think it'll be excellent just like everything he does.

As I'm not 14 years old, I'm not a 'hater' but, I do remember the last time the BBC 'thought' it could continue TG without Wilman & Clarkson. It failed miserably, and it took Andy & Jezza to create a rejuvinated 'new' TG.

The BBC (even with Evans past commercial savvy at the helm of it) think that they can go it alone again, expecially when TG has become the massive world wide sales hit that it haslaugh

Deluded doesn't begin to describe it.

I like Evans as a presenter both 20 years ago and now on R2, hopefully he can breath new life into a format that was dying a slow and painful death.

I frowned with fury at the idea of a TGI Friday rebound with Chris Evens last week, then accidentally really enjoyed it - more than any TV I've watched for years.

Maybe Top Gear with him will be the same - enjoyable TV.

I'll be watching it.

Tough call for the Beeb, on one hand they couldn't continue with the JC format but anything radically new will turn viewers away so its a bit of a lose lose situation for them.

Chris Evans like him or lothe him is not stupid he will make sure its entertaining and fun...give the man a chance.

As for co-presenters, here's my choice...Guy Martin, his TV stuff to date has been excellent and he's a good watchable character I think he would do well on TG, last has to be an ex-racing driver GP or Touring Cars someone with personallity is a must.

I miss Top Gear...I'll watch it no matter what.
