Nobody had heard of Hammond either and people tend to forget that May was a late addition to Top Gear and also unknown to the British public so they were able to build their personas and develop into a comic team together.
There was a lot of luck in that because that never happened with Tiff or Quentin of fat Jason or Tony the rallyman etc etc.
Chemistry is not something you can write.
Indeed, they had zero recognition as I remember and all the better for it IMHO.

Eddie Jordan... hmmm. It's a no from me. I'm not sure how much personality MLB has either.

The jury is out.
The Beeb have a lot invested in this, and not often they have flops. So I'll keep faith with them.

How much publicity is Top Gear getting versus the new Clarkson/May/Hammond/Wilman project?

That's all that matters to the BBC until the point the show airs. After that, the ratings will decide its fate.

Both new shows need to be different from the last few series of TG as it had become predictable and stale.

Well, they shouldn't have involved Evans then. His list of TV failures is extensive.

We have this thread about Top Gear and then several threads appear daily about this or that person linked with Top Gear. Constant people moaning it will never be the same, why are they linked, Chris Evans will ruin it etc.....

I can't wait to see what actually happens. Do people realise the Old Top Gear is still available and they can watch it on Amazon Prime. This is something which potential could be great, or rubbish. Until it appears on the TV I'm open minded and willing to give it a go.

I'm pretty open-minded about things too, but all the ingredients going into this new new Top Gear are well known.

I'm willing to bet my house this is going to tank, if it ever makes it to air at all.

They seem to be clutching at straws with big names . . . that's not what made TG good or what makes the special's good, nothing to do with big names.

Potentially true though JC did love a toady up to Cruise and Diaz, for example.
However, even if May and Hammond had carried on, it would have been a damp squib without Clarkson. Clarkson, even now, is Top Gear.
It's like making The Sooty Show without Sooty.

That's a sweeping statement.

I'm not a fan of Evans but am still looking forward to seeing what they come up with. The old TG format was more than a little tired, with occasional moments of genius. It's just those moments were getting less and less. It could be good to have Chris Harris in the new mix, so long as it doesn't become a weekly drift-fest. Some proper car reviewing might be good though?

Imagine that old TG was still around, and another channel decided they were going to make a rival with Chris Evens etc. i doubt many people would be taking it seriously.

All the BBC have now is the name, and an odd mix of presenters.

They can either copy the old format, which will not appeal to anyone, or do a more serious car focused program, which will get tiny viewing figures (5th Gear is proof of that).

There are only so many things you can do with car and make it interesting.

But it had become so big could they get away with Chris Evans and a bunch of people no one has heard off??? I mean who outside PH has really heard of Chris Harris? Getting some big names will certainly keep the public interest.

the opposing view is that it;s all well and good havinf somebody famous, but it they are flat and boring on camera, nobody will watch it.

Look at Jodie Kid, very well known and recognisable, obviously into cars, but utterly hopeless as a presenter, as in genuinely cringe worthy.

Or maybe we have forgotten just how hopeless Quentin Wilson is?

It's important that the presenters are real people that the audience can identify with, and I am not sure being a movie star or model is really the right start point.

Do you think the problem with jodie kidd was she is that dull or she just wouldn't open up and sound excited if a car was exciting.

put a camera infront of most people, they are dull and uninteresting.

being a presenter is a skill few people have, combine that with an in depth knowledge of cars and the car industry, a decent sence of humour, the aura of a normal 'bloke', and your potential list is now tiny.

I'm sure Jodie is a nice enough person etc. but on camera, she just does not come across well.

That's a fair point. The only reason this is happening is because the BBC shot the golden goose and are now trying to revive it.

Let's imagine the 'fracas' never occurred, and this morning we all awoke to a news story that Chris Evans was to head-up a rival to Top Gear with Matt LeBlanc confirmed as co-presenter, with possible input from..... Eddie Irvine and Sabine Schmitz!!

eek

We'd be checking the calendar to see if it was April 1st.

IMHO if Evans had rocked up to ITV or Sky with that pitch they would have politely smiled and ended the meeting with 'we'll call you'.
