Sicario - Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin

Just caught this and I have to say I can't see what all the fuss is about. Kate didn't strike me as a battle hardened FBI agent and the film did end abruptly leaving me with 'is that it?' I did however liked the acting all round and the dinner table was genuinely shocking. I actually think the film could have been a bit longer.

. Feels like a movie that should get a directors cut release with an extra 30 minutes added to flesh it out. Beautifully shot, well acted and very tense in places but ultimately a bit lightweight?SWoll said:

Not much happened and I think there could have been more development of Alejandro and Kate. I watched it on a plane (in the cheap seats) so there were constant interruptions, disturbances, bad lighting, not great sound, small screen let alone the edits for content.
I was gripped from minute 1. I loved the slow pace story telling, allowing things to linger and fester as they do in real life. I loved that it wasn't a constant spoon fed exposition of plot as too many thrillers are now.
Blunt was, as ever, excellent. Her character is the patsy, always kept deliberately two steps behind del Toro and Brolin's (again excellent in the malevolence) so they can operate as they want / need to get their mission done. I expected her to die "in the line of duty" near the end just to wrap it up for them.
I will watch again shortly on a bigger screen with no distractions and enjoy again.

Late to the party but I watched it last night. Very good film. The black SUV raid and subsequent traffic jam situation was terrific. The cinematography was brilliant with the silhouetted sunset/switching to night vision googles walk, a real highlight. While the score was wonderful in ramping up the tension, but Blunts character was naive and stupid and spoilt it for me slightly.
She's a trained SWAT team member who goes after mass murderers (first raid) and then acts like a shocked schoolgirl when Brolin and his team bend the rules to catch those responsible. People who nearly blew her up, remember! What did she expect when she stepped up to a bigger game?
She then actually had to be told by the boss of her domestic unit that it wasn't all his idea and that it was authorised from on high. Who'd have thought eh! Perhaps the private jet should've been her first clue...
One scene actually made me laugh. After (the excellent) Del Toro put two in her vest and she stumbled out of the tunnel, and Brolin had to restrain her.
So she's in the middle of the desert at night, with trained CIA killers and a SEAL team (one of whom has his gun in the face of her pointless partner and is itching to pull the trigger) so what does she do? She stands up and shouts, "I'm going to tell everyone what you've done, I will expose you all!"
Really?!?
No-one would be that bloody stupid! Let alone someone is supposed to be a streetwise SWAT team member. Her characters total cluelessness about how things work at that level spoilt it a bit for me. It wasn't realistic.
TAnd of course she was all hurt when told why she was on board in the first place. What tactical pointers did she think she could give the CIA and SEAL's? She was just a bit of an annoying tt who got in their way. If they hadn't needed her to sign the papers, they'd have left her in the desert.
Rant over.
All in all a good watch and I'd recommend it.

A sequel is coming, with Brolin and Del Toro, without Blunt (will be busy being Mary Poppins) and without Denis Villeneuve directing (will be busy with Blade Runner 2)

As you were.
I believe that there are three stories that can be turned into films following this theme and if handled correctly as a drama, not an action flick it could well be a great sleeper. Loved the first one and the storyline was not half bad. More CIA stuff and less DEA stuff, but lets not go Bourne. Bring on the script writer, producer, director and cinematographer.
