So I wonder what happens now to the Indestructible Hi Lux, the Rocket Mini, the Cool Wall and all the other tat adoring the studio.....
Seems a shame that the various project cars might just end up as scrap.frown
Yep - same with the lap times boards, the engine coffee table etc.

I kinda missed all that stuff in tonight's episode - the studio just felt so empty.
Perhaps they'll go to Beaulieu with all the other stuff? A lot of the project cars are there and I'm pretty sure the Hilux is there when they are not filming anyway.

I've got to whole heartedly disagree. It's not chemistry, it's poorly scripted, predictable nonsense. I honestly don't know you can watch it and think anything else. The gags seem to be aimed at pre teen and teenage children. I watched about 20 mins last night and realised it was no different to the rest of top gear (was hoping for a less BS).

I for one am really looking forward to Chris Evans leading the show, and hopefully a slightly more grown up TV program.
Yeh can't wait until they go 'grown up' again maybe they should even invite Quentin Wilson back to drone on about car crime or the latest bargain classic rolleyestongue out

I thought it was the funniest thing I've seen in a while, in fact since they stopped showing it! It made me realise how much I used to look forward to it and it is a sad loss.

No one commissioned it.

What was shown last night was just footage they had filmed prior to Clarkson getting the elbow.

I enjoyed it. I do wonder whether some of the shows critics actually watch anymore as some of the recent series have been some of the best they've done.
I'm with you.

I am sure it would have been very different if they had known beforehand that it was the last episode and they would probably have blown the studio up or something like that.
I guess everyone wondered how they would end such a show - now we know

I know it's been done before. Several times. It should be stale and unfunny. Childish and repetitive.

But smashing up caravans round a track once again had me crying with laughter,

Last episode, so here goes....

It's a tired formula that needs an overhaul. I know last nights was cobbled together and it wasn't their worst, but we've seen it all before. Car breaks down, man falls in water, cars churn up english countryside while getting stuck in mud. They are a victim of there own success and the motoring element is really all in the background now.

TG has been crying out for a rival program and while I never thought in a million years the rival program will effectively be 'new' Top Gear, that's now what's going to happen. JC, JM, RH will do exactly what they have been doing all these years just on a different channel. New TG will hopefully get a bit more serious. I'm not asking for the days of WW, but it needs a new life, a new perspective, a new direction. It maybe a disaster, but if we have a more serious motoring show in the form of TG and the fest that is old TG on ITV, surely that's a win win?

I'll be watching both and I'm sure the perfect program will be a mixture of both formats, with some sketches/scenes/takes only fit for the bin in both cases. Does that mean I shouldn't watch either program? Of course not. Both will have their high points, both their lows, but at least now there will be yet more 'motoring entertainment' on tv and that can't be a bad thing in my eyes.

I enjoyed it but it highlighted how Hammond and May could never do the show without Clarkson. It would be like Bebop and Rocksteady with no Shredder.

Good post, sums it up nicely.

I have to admit I giggled. Multiple times. And for that I give thanks, as a good giggle is not something to take for granted these days.

Yes it was formulaic, predictable and clearly patched together. But despite that Hammond being strapped to the wing of a biplane (in an entirely scripted denouement) was worth the hour on it's own. Top marks to the cameraman and editors that had him flying behind Clarkson & Hammond screaming - Benny Hill/Dads Army/Carry On comedy at its best.

I'm guessing that's a sarcastic comment, as you're fking deluded if you think Evans can do anything remotely considered 'grown up'.... laugh

Not sarcastic at all. I think he can do a much better job of it than JC has been. We'll have to wait and see though!

I did enjoy the SUV thing. Some funny stuff in there and a nice way to remind us how the chemistry between them is what made the show. It was pretty obvious it was never intended to be the final act though.

As for this whole affair leaving an opportunity for a grown up car programme, I don't think that's true at all. The masterstroke of Top Gear's return was that they accepted that TV is a visual-based medium and the internet is an information-based one. They realised that the internet had begun to fulfill the role of providing information and debate about cars, and instead they got on with making cars look cool and fun.

It's no coincidence that TG has always looked magnificent.

It'll very difficult to find a new car-based format that will utilise the best of TV and also compete with the online world. If they stick with the TG comedy formula it will always be compared to the most successful British TV show of all time, if they go serious and geeky they're competing with the internet and can't possibly win.

I wish Evans all the best but I'm not sure the BBC have the creativity or bravery to make it work these days.

My belief stems from Jeremy Clarkson's character on Top Gear being contrived, boring, repetitive and moronic aimed I'm sure at kids and adults with a similar intellect. CE hasn't exactly got a difficult job to better him.

That's the Clarkson who was instrumental in creating one of the most successful TV shows in history?

Since you apparently have a superior intellect, perhaps you could explain why you think that won't be difficult for Evans.
