Most TV shows/series have formats, Top Gear much less than most. Anyone who thinks this will improve with the arrival of Evans is deluded.
I used to love TG but take the rose tinted specs off for a moment; over the last ten or so series you have to have an exceedingly low IQ to find Hammond and Clarkson running into May's car stil funny, Every script was pretty much identical with the same characters in similar scenarios; rinse and repeat. The appeal target audience seemed to be under tens.

Am I wrong to want more; still want humour, still want fast cars in exotic locations, etc but thinly veiled double entendres and overt 'penis' gags appeals to the lowest common denominator, much like most threads on PH these days.

The BBC wrote off One Foot in the Grave after it had had its time. 'I don't belive it!' had stopped being a funny catch phrase a number of series previously. Why should TG be any different. Clarkson was bored of it otherwise he would not have reported himself for the assault.

What is safe to predict is that all the TG supporters on PH who cry foul when anyone has a negative comment about 'their favourite programme' will be here slating any new versions and we will have come full circle.

I look forward to the irony.
TV shows tend to get cancelled when people stop watching. That isn't the case TG.

The humour may not be sophisticated, but I enjoy Vic and Bob as much as I do Stewart Lee or Curb Your Enthusiasm.

The sadness for me is that Clarkson knows so much about cars, the business, and the history of a vast range of machines and marques, and yet in the last few series we got to see and hear so little of it. All in the name of "hahaaa but its an entertainment show, not a car show". Fair enough, but that doesn't stop me being sad to have lost a show about cars.

Interesting to see that Andy Wilman still doesn't see that assaulting someone at work means that you get fired.
My thoughts exactly

I watched my first TG in years last night just to see the MGB to be honest and nothing's changed with their antics. Ok you can argue it's entertainment but its so aimed and the dumbed down "I don't even like cars that much" brigade that those who have even the slightest knowledge on cars are forgotten.

I watched it waiting for the faults that were guaranteed to happen with the classics. Wasn't it strange that all three had problems. A typical contrived Top Gear.
The Peugeot stopped every so often with what sounded like a coil breaking down misfire, but miraculously fired into life again when it was push started 2 mins later. The MGB had a similar issue but I'm sure the sound effects were dubbed because at one point when Hammond was saying "Oh it's dying" or something and the spluttering/coughing sound effects were going on, there was clearly a shot of the rev counter that showed it pointing almost vertical at about 3500rpm, the sound wasn't coming from an engine revving to 3500rpm.

And the Fiat, pulls in the the track because there is some serious bottom end noises according to Clarkson, then they put it on a Dyno for a power run?! Hammond did all that work to the MGB, couldn't he have replaced the rear springs?

I did like the seats in it though.

On the upside we won't ever again have to look at James May in that jacket.

George Dawes was an awesome character and would genuinely belly laugh at him in the beginning. However, would I have found him funny after 22 series? I may chortle now if I see a rerun but that's it.

I want TG to survive in a new form and with the three on Netflix or wherever they turn up but by god, it needed a bloody good refresh.

You are, of course, quite correct.

If you and I pool our IQs, we might be able to match zebra's and enjoy his brave new world of intelligent comedy.

On the other hand, probably not if you are entertained by a long running thread about someone miss spelling their login details.

Enjoyed that. Laughed a lot but feel sad. They are 3 mates having fun with cars which many people relate to. Going to be hard to follow and build that sort of relationship again

Perfect TG episode. No audience/celebrity bullst, no SIARPC, just 3 mates pissing about. Found the studio segways with no JC a bit sad but other than that it worked for me.

Edited to add. How weird was it at the end of the episode with the 'goodbye' and no music...

Aye, these poor intellectuals simply can't cope with a sense of humour...smile
Its really funny the first series you see the recurring gag but still finding it funny when you not only have you seen it hundreds of times but you know exactly when the gag is coming wears thin.

But hey, if that floats your boat crack on. It must be great to have the comedic sensibilities of child.
Do zebras see things in black and white?

With apologies for the non-MENSA like quality of the obvious pun...

I watched it last night on BBC iPlayer.

I thought the classic cars piece was ok, and the SUVs one rather tedious. Very much going out with a whimper rather than a bang.

I thought that final episode was pants. It was almost if it was done on purpose as I had enjoyed the final series.

Another load of dreary scenes of them traveling in convoy. Seen it too many times and actually got so bored I turned it off. I have never done that with Top Gear before and I still enjoy the reruns on Dave and BBC3.
Thought it was the best for ages.No siarpc, news, stig, how it should have been every week.

Edited by Funkycoldribena on Wednesday 1st July 10:26
The 2 films shown weren't supposed to be the last Top Gear though. They were filmed before the "fracas". So I don't think it was filmed that way on purpose. It was just standard Top Gear messing about.

As for no SIARPC, news etc I thought the show actually lacked something without the normal studio features. I think if every TG was just their films we would have tired of it ages ago. It needed a balance of both sides I think.

I didn't think the films were their best. It's only when you see repeats of some of the older shows, you can see how good it could actually be.

They could of done an episode of just JC sitting there picking his nose for an hour and some of you lot would say 'best show for ages'. smile
