Has anyone seen The Midnight Meat Train?

It has Bradley Cooper and Vinnie Jones in it. Worth a watch IMO.

I watched it so long ago I didn't know who Bradley Cooper was, it wasn't one I'd watch again hehe

One of the first films I ever watched on Netflix, I found it quite enjoyable for one of those you didn't know existed.

Good to see so many suggestions....

In the end, I watched 'It Follows' and tbh I was totally underwhelmed. I'm not sure why it has good reviews, to me it was a low budget, poor storyline, badly acted film that never really got going.
Nevermind!

I then re-watched The Woman in Black, then followed up with Sinister.
Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for a horror as neither of these particularly did it for me either - Sinister was the best of the 3 though.

Will try some of the other suggestions soon!

Martyrs - watched it a while back. Great movie.

Surprised by those who didn't like Event Horizon... I thought it was brilliant personally but would class it more as a sci-fi thriller than an out and out horror.

Far too many film makers forget that what you can't see is scarier than what you can. Look at the hand holding scene from The Haunting, which creates real tension with only the power of suggestion, or how little the Alien is seen in the first film. Getting a bunch of unlikeable teens together and creating lots of cheap jump scares does not make a good horror film.
Indeed! Exhibit 1 - Jeepers Creepers. Pretty good and sinister to start off with... then the thing with wings turns up. Rubbish.

I found The Others and Pan's Labyrinth both quite good.

TV Series - American Horror Story. Excellent!

Did you watch it on a small screen with headphones? I don't want to come across as condescending but it's quite a smart film in the way it uses subtle background queues rather than being more obvious than a typical jump scare film. I don't know whether it was placebo or not but I'm pretty sure it was using infrasound also - a bit like the beginning of Irreversible - which would be lost on smaller speakers / headphones adding to the tone, tension and build up.

However, because it relies a lot on tension, if it doesn't grab you then it has nothing to build on.

Each to their own and all though squire!

Agreed.
At face value it is a terrible film based on a terrible premise.
But for me it was so well done and brilliantly created this constant build up of relentless dread using subtle tactics that it worked perfectly.

The thing about subtle horror films (which for me are definitely the best ones) like Blair Witch, Paranormal Activity etc.. if you don't feel the tension and buy into it, then what you are left with is actually nothing at all. I can completely understand why people think those two films are terrible despite them being two of my favourites.

Ok. I am going to confess something here.

Paranormal activity scared the absolute bejesus out of me. There's something about that resonates with some deep part of my psyche. A bit like when I first saw Jaws as a kid. I think I am definitely able to 'buy in'.

Loved It Follows and the Babadook but I really struggled with Paranormal Activity. Subtle horrors are definitely up my street as mentioned above

Just watched the Borderlands and it wasn't bad, even if the sceptic character was rather annoying and calling your priest a name that sounds similar to Father Crilley is rather distracting. Oddly enough it was filmed near me going by the road signs and one of the characters has the same name as my best mate.

Nope, bluray, 1080 on a UHD 60inch screen with 5:1 surround.... Just didn't entertain me! Maybe I was having an off night....

Someone just mentioned the original paranormal activity... Yea I enjoyed that too, havn't seen it in years so might be due a re-watch!

Hellraiser gave me the frights when I originally watched it....not seen it in years so not sure if it's stood the test of time.

Original Omen was good.

Of the "modern" horrors Blair Witch is the one that stands out
It hasn't https://goo.gl/maps/Ux968
