Horror is quite possibly the hardest one to pull off.
I think Horror and Comedy are equally tough as they are both hugely subjective by the watcher whereas a good thriller tends to pull in the majority.

Problem with them and a lot of other films is that they explain the origins and motives of the killer. It's far scarier when someone/something turns up and starts killing with no apparent motive

Page 3 and no mention of Halloween (1978)?
My scariest film of all time! Mind you, I did watch it when I was about 12... having to run home (terrified) in the dark across the fields from my friends house was not fun!

Now 20 years later I still think of that mask and it makes all my hairs stand up on my neck and gives me the creeps if I'm on my own in the house or outside in the dark laugh
Haha. I remeber coming across it around about 12 also and it also scaring me to the point where I couldn't sleep. Still love it to this day!

Did you know the have just recently announced the release of Halloween 11 (yes, eleven) next year:

Hopefully better than the last two horrendous Zombie efforts.
Look forward to it! I hope they include the music/piano riff from the original because evening thinking that tune in my head scares me... the original music is less polished and more eerie somehow.

Not the greatest of films but this scene from house on haunted hill properly gave me the creeps when I first saw it, home alone at night , lights off, TV loud!

I think that's probably why so much recent horror has resorted to the quiet quiet quiet LOUD! jump scare ghost train formula. It's hard to genuinely make people frightened because people tend to be frightened of different things, so it's much easier to make people feel tense or misdirect them, and then make them jump out of their seat by giving them a sudden surprise.

A lot of modern horror doesn't try to scare people, it just tries to cure their hiccups.

A slight wild card one here:

Technically not a horror but the original version of Funny Games is one of the most disturbing films I have seen and fills you with disabling dread in exactly the same way the best horrors do. Can't recommend it enough to people who like that kind of sensation.
Brilliant movie! So much so that the remake is a shot for shot affiar much like the colour version of Psycho with Vince Vaughn.

Funny Games is one of my favourite and go to "creepy" films.

If you haven't already seen it, I'd recommend Cache (Hidden) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387898/

Ah yeah! That is a strange old film isn't it! The scene when the old guy was smashed up with the hammer and kept thanking him for doing it - weird and damn painful!

I have a soft spot for the comedy horror The Cottage, Reece Shearsmith (the League of Gentlemen), a non-CGI Andy Serkis and Spudgun (Steven O'Donnell) from Bottom.

Great ending. biggrin

I'm not keen either, I've tried watching it a few times just in case I missed something but I don't seem to get it. I found Alien more of a horror than it to be honest. I even watched it in the dark with headphones on to really try and add some potential for feeling threatened.

Loads mentioned in an earlier thread on the same topic:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=733...

I still rate The Orphanage.

Braindead
Noroi: The Curse
The Collector
Shaun of the Dead
The Exorcist
Saw
Grindhouse
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre
A Tale of Two Sisters
Mr. Brooks (not really a horror but good)

Having seen some of the replies i have to admit www.theync.com to be the best source of media pleasure.

Gore for me in films died after seeing plenty of the real thing, cant deal with over the top glorified death when theres plenty of examples of true horror and gore on that website.

Horror is best played in your mind, where you fill in the blanks. I can only describe a good horror film as giving you the fear you had if you were afraid of the dark as a child.

This 100% - good horror is psychological with visual and aural clues to help us to scare the heck out ourselves.

The reason I've always found books to be 'scarier' than films. Your own imagination is king
