Just watching the "Dam Busters" a 1954 film on 5USA and after each ad break there's an announcement - that the film contains "offensive language". What absolute nonsense!!

I guess they'll be saying that if 2 characters kiss then the film contains sexual content.

That'll be the version with the dog's name still in it.

It's probably because of the name of Gibson's dog.

Unfortunately the name of the dog is pretty offensive to most people these days (unless your an American rapper)

My grandmothers dog was called that. At the time never really thought about it.

My sisters' boyfriend is from the West Indies and last time I saw the Dambusters he was sitting watching it too. His parody of the bit where Gibson is told of s' death had me laughing so hard it physicaly hurt, imagine the following in a deliberately thick accent...

'Yo, Gibson Sah! Some white boy motherfkers from outta da hood just done a drive by on s ass!!'

I just do not understand the PC brigade getting so offended on behalf of everyone else.

It was a historical fact that Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC's dog was called that, in the same way that the Dambusters raid was a historical fact.

By all means debate the changing social landscape and the change in attitudes but do not try and edit history - that is a very dangerous path to tread.

And to those who say the raid had little long term impact and the Ruhr industries were back up and running 6 months later - that was 6 months when Nazi Germany was unable to devote labour or materials to building coastal defences in France, which was, to say the least 'quite important' come D-Day.

"Apres mois le deluge."

We owe those men such a debt, regardless of what they called their pets.

Please excuse the edit.

I read one account of the raid that estimated 1,000 various anti aircraft guns were pulled back from the Eastern Front just to defend the dams after the raid, I think it was in this one...

As you rightly say, the effects on the constuction of the 'Atlantic Wall' were also a massive if unexpected bonus of the raid.

Much more recently we had a black Fell terrier bred from this dog http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/147587-...
Was there anything racist about the name, all of the litter were named with a black association such as Coal, Pepper , Ash etc.?
