"Doors Open" - a pleasant little British heist comedy based on an Ian Rankin story (so set in Edinburgh) with Stephen Fry, Dougie Henshall and Lenora Critchlow. It's not quite up there with Snatch or Lock, Stock, but amusing enough in its own right with a nice little wrinkle, which hasn't been telegraphed, towards the end.

7.5/10

I'm watching LA Confidential and this 1997 film compared to what I've seen in the last couple of years, emphasises why TV has become the medium of choice nowadays. Hollywood has followed the Bollywood formula of do what's been done before crap and it will eventually work against them.

It's a lot gentler than either of those (look at the cast), but it's definitely a British heist movie.

Great video.

I also love this unofficial one of the same song:

1,000 musicians got together in Cesena, Italy to try to ask the Foo Fighters to come and play in their town.

Of course they did - It's the Foo Fighters!

The Frozen Ground with Nicholas Cage, about a detective in Alaska hunting a serial killer.

8/10, really enjoyed it.

About Time.
What a beautiful film, I knew it was special from the first few minutes, it had me enraptured. Not many romantic comedies are that endearing to watch, and it didn't go down the usual cookie cutter formula.
A delight to watch from start to finish, had my heart in my mouth a few times.

The Departed
Oscar winning Scorcese film starring Matt Damon, Leo Di Caprio, Jack Nicholson and, er, Marky Mark (who seems to be a terrible actor with a brilliant agent).

Average. Really odd camera work and editing as it jumped about all over the shop, as if trying to inject excitement into an otherwise quite forgettable scenes. Feels like it had quite an interesting story in there that should have been full of tension, but it wasn't told very well for me. Too long as well - my heart sank when I looked at the duration to find an hour remaining.

Currently watching Withnail & I.
Never gets old. Great performances all round especially Richard Griffiths.

It's a 9/10 from me.

Finally got around watching The Hateful Eight last night. It was ultimately enjoyable, but cripes was it a slog to get to the conclusion! Wife fell asleep way before the end.

Not one I'd want to watch again anytime soon, unlike Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill (Vol 1)

Bastille Day

Aside from the fact I'm sure the producers could have found a black American actor - instead of Idris Elba (!!) - to play a CIA agent, the film was enjoyable and had a lot of action in it.

A solid PH rating of 5/7 wink

ETA: there was a continuity error when one of the French RAPID crew was injured in a fight in one scene, but later the same day he was unmarked. Next scene, bruised and cut again - all in the same day.

Suburra

Gritty, stylish thriller set against the corruption of Italian politics.

Quality stuff, if not exactly cheery.

A tonic to Hollywood guff if you like Indie movies.

I have to agree with you.

Everyone seems to love it but it just wasn't that great imho.

Finally got round to watching The Martian last night. There is of course a lot in the book that doesn't make it on the film, but I think they did a pretty good job overall. Good use of gaffer tape. 8/10
