Winter's Bone.
Brilliant film, a grim lil slice of Americana from the Ozarks. It reminded me of an American version of those grimy UK dramas we get. I recall a similar film I viewed with Christian Bale which was on the box some weeks ago, but that was still a slightly jazzy, 'ooo somebody's gonna get shot, it's all high drama' sort of thing.
This was different, no silly gun fight, just intensity of somebody really up against it in a true to life situation, the bits with the hill billies was pretty intense.
I think I may have tried to watch it when it was last one, and deleted it after 5 minutes, stuck wit it this time because I recognised the protagonist, glad I did, best US film I've seen this year.
Decent film and a proper career launcher for sure

This sort of film is typically right up my street...yet I found it intensely boring watching Jennifer Lawrence basically walk around for days saying "Have you'all seen ma daddey?"

I didn't know, but I guessed it might have been considering her age.

I had that issue first time I tried to view it, but really enjoyed my second attempt.

Hell or High Water

A modern western with 5 leads - the 4 main actors + the scenery. Great dialogue, moral ambiguity, great photography and a very good soundtrack. If you liked No Country for Old Men then you will like this one too.

8.5 cacti out of 10
Going to see this tomorrow. Love NCfOM so I have high hopes.
Very good film - echos of NCfOM but it's still it's own thing,

Top writing, great cinematography, superb acting with Ben Foster just edging it as the standout. Nick Cave's score is perfect and I've discovered I have zero interest in visiting West Texas (or the bits of New Mexico where it was filmed) - extremely stark.

No good guys or bad guys (except for The Banks) just people trying to get by and survive life.

Also felt it could sit with 'The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford' - had a similar feel for me.

I'm listening to the soundtrack now smile Glad you enjoyed it, Ben Foster is very good in it although he may be getting a little type cast. Agree on the 'Assassination....', very similar pacing.

Just come back from watching The Magnificent Seven. We both thought it was very good, and a much welcome change from the endless stream of Marvel rehashes..

Watched "bad moms" and was pleasantly surprised. A little soppy in places (kinda to expected) but overall a fun film

"Need for Speed"... it was on Amazon Prime, but otherwise I have no excuse.
Sub 3/60.
Only benefit was letting me know how butt ugly those Koenigsegg Ageras are from front on.

Loopers on Amazon Prime. A time travel film (with Bruce Willis), and anything with time travel in it gets my attention.

Good fun, still trying to work out one part of it which I didn't quite understand, so might re-watch. A solid 7.5/10.

Have you seen Source Code? I preferred it to Loopers.

Whiplash. JK Simmons is a fantastic sadist. Well worth a watch. 362 out of 400.

Straight Outta Compton - Good story of NWA (not that I know anything about NWA), but told a story about artists, not gangstas. Guns were part of it, but not glorified. 6.5/10

......Did you know.....

Sourcecode was directed by Duncan Jones, who apart from being David Bowies son, was also the writer and director of Moon, which is always worth a recommend smile

Left Behind - watched last night, one of Nicholas Cage pay the bill movies - was as bad as a TV film, rubbish dialogue, crazy storyline... in fact recollecting the acting seemed nearly as bad as Acorn Antiques (by Victoria Wood), but not on purpose.... 1/10 - avoid!
