We watched about half of The Great Gatsby last night. Sumptuous, but utterly ruined by this guy:
.
Sure he's a great guy IRL but he does come across as a snivelling little dweeb.

Oh and don't miss True Grit on TV tonight if you've not seen it. Even if you have!
Isnt the character supposed to be played like that though? The book is written in very much the style of a small town guy 'looking up' to the high society characters of Gatsby, Daisy etc, so in that respect it stays quite true.

I read the book years ago but I do remember he was a war veteran.
Maguire is so wet behind the ears it's dripped all over his collar.
Wholly lacking any front, confidence or charisma; he's like Elijah Wood without the muscle.

just watched the very low budget but actually quite funny and dry Earthquake 10.0 (2014).

it was on whilst I was job hunting. i'd go as far as to say whilst along the cheapo lines of many an afternoon and early evening syfy channel offerrings this was better than most.

5/10 but it was never going to be much higher, ropey SFX aside - aren't they all? - the script was pretty good for the money.

:-)

Not a film but I have just binged on Ash vs Evil Dead. Absolutely awesome right down to his sidekicks, completely worthy of the name, and being old has barely dulled ash at all.

It takes a special kind of film to make me fall asleep 30 minutes through, when I'm not even tired. Black Mass did just that. I watched the remaining 90 minutes the next day and it almost did the same. Disappointment levels similar to American Hustle.

I watched "The Fear of 13" on iPlayer last night.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5083702/

It's a film/documentary about an American (Nick Yarris) who spent so long on death row and failed so many times to have DNA evidence for his case checked that he actually gave up on life and wrote to the Governor to ask to be put to death within 60 days (as was his right).

I found it fascinating, the chap was clearly a bad lad in his early life and I found some of his recollections hard to believe at first but when it got to the end - wow. I can't imagine coping with that situation.

I only made it halfway through and might not bother watching the rest.

On the other hand I watched The Big Short, which is worth watching but maybe not quite up to the hype. It felt much the same as Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room though different approach and scandal. 7/10

After Airplane! last weekend we watched Uncle Buck and Spies like Us
80's re-run weekend, both 7.5/10

They don't make them like that any more.

Now You See It.
Became more tedious as it went on, and with a let-down ending.

Fury - strong start and middle, with two really good action scenes, but the ending is far too OTT

Sunday -Training Day. Took a while to figure out what was happening but really enjoyed it. 8/10
Monday - The Negotiator. Stretches poetic license a bit but a great performance by Samuel L.J. 7/10
Tuesday - Source Code. A bit of everything and watchable. 7/10

Uncle Buck is a 10 all day long!

You're right though, 80's comedies are still so watchable smile

Black Mass

Gangster films can be so good when done well, and so tedious when not. This was close to the tedious end of the scale. I watched it over 2 nights because the consistent swearing just got boring in the end.

30% - I wouldn't watch again

Bridge of Spies

Tom Hanks is usually a good bet for picking both a good role in a good film, and he didn't disappoint here. The story of Gary Powers is well known but knew nothing about the stories around the other characters.

The representation of late 1950's Berlin was brilliant not-least the scenes showing the building of the wall and the absolutely power-craziness of the unelected "officials" and military in the so-called Democratic Republic.

The film made me read up on the Berlin Wall today, and some of the other articles linked to in that Wikipedia article.

I liked the 1960's appearance of Germany in recent UNCLE film too but it's amazing how the real-life story from BoS was so much more engaging that the fictional UNCLE.

10/10 - I'd watch it again

Not wrong, that whole era was epic for comedy stuff.

I never tire of watching Fletch. Loved it the first time I rented it on video back in 1986, and still love it just as much to this day.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles, perhaps?

I remember renting out a film back in the day, the first film I ever seen John Candy in. It was called Volunteer's, with a young Tom Hanks. I thought Candy was great in that - but it seems to be one of those films that never gets aired at all!
