Planes, Trains and Automobiles, perhaps?

I remember renting out a film back in the day, the first film I ever seen John Candy in. It was called Volunteer's, with a young Tom Hanks. I thought Candy was great in that - but it seems to be one of those films that never gets aired at all!
Love Planes and Trains.
I don't remember Volunteers (but I've probably seen it) I thought you were referring to Stripes which was John Candy and Bill Murray (1981).

While we're on the subject of 80s films, and Tom Hanks, I miss funny Tom Hanks from the 80s.

The 'Burbs, Dragnet, Turner & Hooch, Splash, Big, The Money Pit. Serious Tom Hanks from the 90s on is good, and funny Tom does pop up sometimes, but those 80s films were good.

Just finished John Wick.

Loved it, proper silly revenge action goodness.

we watched 'The Money Pit' several months ago (kind of appropriate given we were mid resto at the time) and really enjoyed it

I suppose I'd plump for Planes, Trains and Automobiles...just, perfect.

I vaguely recall Volunteers.

Lazer Team - 6/10 - kick starter film from the you tube channel/company roosterteeth. I brought in to the kick starter 18 months ago as I love their content. Not a bad movie for their first bash at a full movie. some very funny moments, most of which seem to come from Gavin Free.

Watched The Big Short after the reviews on here. One of the best films I have seen for a long time and Bale, once again, proves himself to be a very watchable actor.

A couple this week:

The Revenant: Straightforward revenge plot. DiCaprio good but critics seem to be banging on about how this is the one for the Oscar he so richly deserves. I don't know but I think it's beautifully filmed and the landscape is spectacular. Hardy plays the bad guy with his typically gritty method and I wouldn't be surprised he if wins a best supporting actor. OK film but not great for me. 6.5/10

Sicario: I deliberately avoided all reviews for this as I like Villeneuve as a director. Not too bad overall but in the end a straightforward revenge flick with added grey-area politics. Blunt OK but I didn't like her character, BDT good as the very nasty Medellin man. Brolin played Brolin well. Expected more though and it left me unsatisfied. 6/10

The Babadook - Single mum and boy spooked by 'Babadook' in their bedrooms at night. The house was creepy, the book was creepy and especially the boy was freaky creepy. The Babadook, not so much. 6/10

"Dave? Hello Dave"

Really good film up until the point Papa Lazarou makes his appearance.

Child 44

Soviet war hero turned cop hunts serial killer against backdrop of post-war russki politics.

Read the book a while ago, hasn't translated well to film - bit of a dark, muddled mess. Tom Hardy as the lead watch-able as ever, couple of cool Tatra's motoring about; otherwise mostly forgettable.

American Ultra

The Social Network guy is a stoner in some back water town and suffers panic attacks. That is until some guys come to kill him and he realises he's the next Bourne Identity.

Half decent film to watch when you just want to zone out and not think too much. Good bit of action, good few laughs, story is OK at best.

5.5/x

No Escape.

Owen Wilson and family move to an unspecified Far Eastern country, just as there's a coup and the locals go around killing any foreigner they find - so they must escape the country.

We quite enjoyed it, and Pierce Brosnan was pretty good as their only ally, although the accent was a bit dodgy..
