long flight meant i got to catch up on some recent releases...

steve jobs: 9/10. really enjoyed this. i am fully aware its scripted and some of the real life people naturally have issues with how they're portrayed, but its a very strong piece of work and stands far above the 'jobs' film. danny boyle's done a great job of injecting life into the script, i thought act 2 particularly was the stand out section. also fassbender becomes jobs so much that you just don't realise he looks nothing like him. strong cast all round really, i was surprised seth rogen could act.

only bit i disliked was the end on the roof where jobs talks to his daughter. specifically what he says [ipod reference] which seemed overly cheesy when the scene called for something much stronger.

the martian: 7/10. watchable but not captivating. the scenes back on earth were poor and the scene where the guy explains the slingshot to a room full of top level scientists just laughable. i also thought sean bean looked like he just CBA'd being there at all.

Kill Kane - a grotty little brit revenge/gangster flick starring Vinnie Jones, it's actually not as bad as it sounds. It's worse, when you consider that VJ was nowhere near the worst actor in this little flick.... avoid

Kung Fu Killer (2014) - Donnie Yen. Some great fight scenes and wire work well worth it if you like Chinese m/a movies

Hahahah! I'd like to say I'll pass that along, but he's already insufferable!

Since watching Sicario I've been on a Denis Villeneuve binge.

Prisoners - Hugh Jackman in out-of-normal-character father whose daughter is taken, Jake Gyllenhaal plays the detective assigned to the case. Good I thought. Had me guessing a few times, well acted too with good supporting cast. A huge dose of irony at the end. 7/10

Enemy- Jake Gyllenhaal again. I really have no idea on the ending on this one. Quite stylish and nice crumpet in it. Not sure what to make of it TBH. 6/10, which may rise if I understood it a bit more.

I think you've been too kind about it.

Trumbo. Really enjoyed this, although a bit of Googling this morning makes me suspect that the position of Edward G Robinson was a bit more complicated than as portrayed. Good portrayal of the level of paranoia in the US at the time though and I learned something that I didn't know about the production of Spartacus

8.5/11 for me

Fantastic movie and still the greatest sword fight on film. Ever.

There was a great anecdote told by Mandy Patinkin (Inigo Montoya) about Bob Anderson, the fencing master who taught them to use the blades and choreographed the whole fight (and all the other sword play in the movie).

Apparently when he came on board the stunt co-ordinator was not happy that this old well spoken English guy was any good. So Bob told the guy to grab a foil and come at him... One flick of Bob's foil later and the guy was unarmed. So Bob said "sorry, that wasn't fair, you were not ready. try again". so the guy did, and again, unarmed in a second. Happened a third time before the stunt co-ordinator gave up.

Best bit is.... Bob didn't even get out of his chair where he was sitting calmly with his legs crossed like a gentleman hehe

ps. Among other Bob also played Darth Vader in Star Wars for all the Lightsaber Battles in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi

The Martian 6/10. Admittedly a difficult story to transfer to film, thanks to a lot of technical detail in the book. It looked good but lacked dramatic tension.

Like any number of iconic PH films The Princess Bride doesn't survive a re-visit well. True the sword fights and one-liners are good, when they occur, but the rest is quite slow and not particularly entertaining. Through the correct spectacles though... .

The Princess Bride is fantastic, with or without rose-tints. The only thing that stops it being 10/10 is that I can still only decipher about one word in four that Andre the Giant says confused

Christopher Guest never gets a mention, despite being eclectic enough to have been an evil polydactylist in Princess Bride, the man who shot Jesse James and the legendary Spinal Tap guitarist. Now, that's some range yes
