have you seen Out of the Furnace?
Sorry how can you forget the man who when a doctor tells him that his son is very ill and must leave but it's ok we have a place we can take him punches said doctor in face tells them to leave so his son can face certain death.

Escape from New York

still a cracker 35 years later

"The Names Plissken!"

edit

did some looking at the wiki page, Studio IG (the ghost in the shell crew) was planning an anime with Kurt voice acting snake, it went nowhere as no one wanted a bleak dark gritty show in 2003.

how they would jump at it now!

Could've told you that from the film title laugh

It sounds like one of those rom-coms that's always advertised in the same voice..

"This summer.. one man.. will realise.. She's Funny That Way / She's Just Not Into You / She's a Pyromaniac / She Has Daddy Issues / She's a Hermaphrodite..' etc

It did have a decent cast with Jennifer Aniston, Rhys Ifans and Owen Wilson.

I'd have turned it off but we had visitors watching with us and thought they were enjoying the film. Right from the word go (done in a really bad Brooklyn accent) it was annoying. Got to the end and our guests were relieved too, an hour and a half of that garbage.

Jennifer Aniston. Poor lass, condemned to rom-com hell for some reason. Still, at least she's working unlike, um, what's-her-name and, err, the other one.

It's got Owen Wilson and Aniston so I'm guessing the story goes "Oh man I'm Owen Wilson, I'm a bit of a dick and don't appreciate women, oh look here comes Aniston, I'm going to play her about for a bit, but wait, I'm actually a nice guy and I love her now and I'll dramatically think I'm going to lose her near the end of the film but it turns around"

Rinse & repeat, feel free to replace with Ben Stiller/Vince Vaughn.

Hail Caesar

Looked great and some nice scenes but very little else. The guy who's apparently been cast as the young Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) was the best thing in it which bodes well. Very light on plot but had a nice 'feel' to it.

Better than Burn after Reading, but that's not saying all that much. It's a shame they went quirky rather than go for more of a Millers Crossing or No Country tone as it could have been another LA Confidential.

6/10

You've seen it :-) So what did you think of it?

I don't mind that sort of thing usually, it was just that one seemed like a very Jewish faster with wither lots of very loud overacting or really grating music. The sort of stuff you get on the New life in the sun sort of programs when they're in France.

The Silence (2010) German film about teenagers disappearing 23 years apart. Slow burner but very good acting and stylishly filmed. A very solid 7.5/10 from me.

Bit harsh I gave it 6.5.

10 Cloverfield thingy.Found it a little bit like The Divide.Not sure whether its a 7 or a 5 so I'll go for 6/10.

The Thief
Another of the Arrow Video special edition blurays I bought recently even though I somehow knew nothing of the film, Michael Mann writes and directs made me want to take a look. Essentially James Caan plays a career criminal taking one last big job on which to retire but it's so much more than that.

If you like MM's style (& how couldn't you) this film hits all the right buttons. It's blatently the template for a lot of his later work-using real life criminals and cops as supporting cast members, tangerine dream providing an electro soundtrack, detailed realistic use of tools to perform the robberies-and even some of the scenes are copied. Manhunter's ocean scene and Heat's diner monologues are almost rip offs!

James Caan apparently lists it as his best performance, if you like Heat, Drive or even Miami Vice I'd recommend a watch.

Yes, great film. "Back to work, Frank".

You can almost imagine Neil (Heat) as an older Frank; it would certainly explain his reluctance to get involved in a relationship.

I love MM's films (Heat possibly being on of my favourite movies of all time) but somehow this has passed me by. Looking forward to tracking it down now so thanks for that.

Deadpool - Potty mouth superhero/antihero does a lot of fighting. I had high hopes for this but the humour just didn't click for me, without that the film was drivel. 3/10

I thought this too while watching it, in fact I did wonder why MM didn't change Neil into Frank and make Heat a follow up.

Obviously I know about the path from LA Takedown to Heat, but it would be really interesting to hear Mann's thoughts on all three films I think.
