Oldboy with Josh Brolin, really enjoyed it, quite some story too.
Loved the original so will be watching this one at the weekend and hopefully it compares.
Yup, whilst the new one is good, the old one is much better!
When was the old one around? I will have to try and watch it as I really thought the new one was quite a film, with a great twist.yikes
2003... it is better, no question.

Watched a few decent flicks this past week which i definitely recommend;

Birthday Girl with Nicole Kidman (she is incredibly hot). She plays a Russian mail order bride who is received by a British chap who is sort of a lonely shut-in type. Nice little twist in the fim that i did not see coming.

Black Sea with Jude Law. Came out in late part of 2015 and i never once saw it advertised anywhere, certainly was not in any theaters here in the U.S. but thats a good thing because as I have come to realize the best films are ones that rarely if ever get shown on the "big screen". Another fantastic film that genuinely had me feeling on edge at times. Jude plays a man who aids in the recovery and salvage of submarines who is divorced and just made redundant when he is called upon to take a high risk search and obtain mission in the crimerian sea lay an old nazi sub containing 3 billion dollars worth of gold bars which lay planted on the sea floor. He assembles a team of both Russian and English men and the fun begins. Lots of nice little twists in this film as well.

For this PH lot i'd first recommend seeing Black Sea. You will not regret it.
Saw Black Sea a while ago and deeply regretted it. Everything about is wrong, from the psycho killing crew mates who's the best at his job in the world who cries when another crew mate dies, to taking on the lad to the complete lack of peril whatsoever when the Russians were supposed to be closing in to the petty them and us squabbling over payment when it was made clear to all of them at the beginning exactly how much they'd all be getting paid.

Dreadful film, dreadful story, dreadful acting, dreadful plot 'twists' - it would have done everyone a favour had the Russians found them in the first ten minutes and torpedoed their sorry arses back to Blighty.

I commented on Black Sea a year or so ago. It could have been a great Boys Own type yarn, but failed on almost every level. The crew's reactions were as unnatural as those in Prometheus, and every one of them seemed intent on suicide through their dumb actions. Quite terrible, and a lost opportunity..

Can someone please recommend a few good horror/thriller films? Ones we've enjoyed recently

- Rec
- The Conjuring
- It Follows
- The Orphanage
- The Babadook
- The Disappearance of Alice Creed
- Eden Lake

Cheers
I too enjoyed Babadook. Simple yet effective. Have you seen It Follows? I recently watched it and i have to say it was pretty damn creepy, especially the part in the beginning where the boy has the girl tied up and he wheels her to the edge and we get our first glimpse of "It"... had me pretty freaked out to be honest.
Yep, it's on the list biggrin

Really enjoyed it.

Went to see Central Intelligence on Wednesday. The Mrs likes Dwayne Johnson because he looks like a darker version of me, except he lacks the goatee and directorships of course.

Anyway, I hate to say it but it was quite entertaining in a brain dead type of way.

Watched Life of Pi for the first time this week. Fantastic (literally!)clap Haven't thought about/considered a movie ending as much for years. Recorded from TV in HD but forgot my TV is 3D so could have watched in pseudo 3D mode - doh!

Second one this week - have seen before but forgot story - also superb and a true story - Defiance, Daniel Craig. The fact that they lived for a further two years in the forest and 1200 came out alive. And when they showed the faces of the real people at the end with detail on how their lives went afterwards - lump in throat time.

I thought it was OK. Remove brain and let it stream past you. Enjoyable seeing bits of London being blown up rather than New York for a change. I'd give it 5/10.

Johnny English Reborn

A confused film. Doesn't know whether to be serious or farcical, and swings wildly between them.

I enjoyed it though.

Or, as my dad would say, "It had its moments"

Ab Fab - the movie

First night on release last night and the cinema promo attracted 'the girls', all dressed up as Patsy or Edina to get a cheap cinema ticket for making an effort. Not many fellas in the audience but I don't see why.
I had several 'LOL' moments, it was quite funny really and quite a few cameos to spot.
As you'd expect, just an over the top movie with lots of laughs. You won't regret it.

Absolutely Anything - Simon Pegg, Kate Beckinsale, assorted Brits, Pythons as aliens and Robin Williams as a dog.

British take on a Bruce Almighty/Evan Almighty type story, but decidedly un-American in its approach. Terry Jones directed and the Pythons cameos worked pretty well. It had a Douglas Adams feel to it at times.

Solid 8.5/10

Oh - and there's a shiny McLaren 650s Spider in it too.

BFG. Great honest fairytale, slightly awkward in a good Dahl way. Really enjoyed it with my kid. Mark Rylance's performance was good, but felt laggy in places, perhaps due to motion capture. You'll get it when you see it. 7 or even 8/10.

Independence Day.

My word, I didn't expect them to float a turd as big as the first one, but they did. I now these films are made for morons, but the exposition was just over the top, it was way too basic, 'you're in a coma that you've bene in for 77,000 days...just thought I'd remind you,'
There's about ten good minutes of film in it, probably the worst summer blockbuster I've ever watched. Wanted to be godzilla, alien, predator and a tonne of superior products all rolled into one with a He-Man morality tale tagged on it.
I wanted them all to die as soon as they killed the good aliens.
