Watched Spooks Great good last night. quite enjoyed it, love the nod towards the series
I never saw the series - will the film make sense to me? Is it a pure standalone? In short, I didn't really like it.
They had the opportunity to make a modern day tense thriller like Tinker Tailor, but it's a bit bland.
Harry is the only carry over from the series (okay and one other for a few seconds) and he doesn't act like he did in Spooks and it doesn't use any of the original sets or anything so it doesn't feel like Spooks.
As a stand-alone film it doesn't really work as an action film or a thriller, it's all a bit lacklustre.
It wasn't bad enough to make it switch it off, but when it ended I realised I've given up and I was thinking about something else when I noticed the credits rolling.

Godzilla (2014 reboot)
Slow, slow, slow. Ranty dad, dull son, even duller supporting cast. Mutos looked awful. Only saving grace was Godzilla himself but he wasn't on screen enough.
Disappointing so 2/10.
I sadly agree. I was expecting so much, but it wasn't much better than the 1998 Roland Emmerich version.Slow, slow, slow. Ranty dad, dull son, even duller supporting cast. Mutos looked awful. Only saving grace was Godzilla himself but he wasn't on screen enough.

The Martian. I managed to stay away from the hype and went in knowing relatively little. I enjoyed it, glad I saw it on the big screen (The Electric cinema in W11 - awesome place) although wish I could have seen it in 2D and I probably won't watch it again. Great visuals, great soundtrack but predicable third act and it did get a little TV-movie-ish right at the end. 7/10 from me.

To End All Wars - Starring James Cosmo, Robert Carlyle and Keifer Sutherland. Set in a Japanese POW camp in WW2. It shows more of the brutality and maltreatment of allied POW's at the hands of their Japanese captors than Bridge Over The River Kwai ever did. I watched the film on the Movies 4 Men channel.
A Beautiful Mind- Absolutely superb film, I may have even shed a tear.
Avengers Age of Ultron- That love story between The Hulk and Black widow... what were they thinking, a little underwhelming than the first.
Mission:Impossible 1,2,3 and 4- A little marathon I had before planning to watch the 5th but unfortunately work messed up my plans. Great films all of them I really enjoyed the minimal plot and good action.
Wall street 1,2- I did enjoy both of these, maybe the first more than the 2nd but I still have to read up a little when they are talking in their financial jargon making money on losses and "toxic debt".
The Prestige- Absolutely excellent film, the best all week, if you have not watched this, you need to, excellent twist to the end.
Spy- Excellent comedy. Refreshing from McCarthy after tammy..
Chappie- Really good film, would love to see a sequel with the ending they did.
All in all its been a pretty good week

Fury. Disappointing.
Basically all the cliches from 60s & 70s war films like Battle Of The Bulge and Bridge at Remjegin (I know spelling.) mixed with violence and grit of Saving Private Ryan. The final sequence with the seige of the tank was just ridiculous as the weapons that were clearly available to the Germans would have just split the thing open like a tin can.
And don't forget the shot of Brad Pitt with his shirt off for the ladies.
Watched once, off to the charity shop. 4/10.

Seriously though, you're right.
David Ayer - great at LA cop drama. The rest... hmm.... I fear for 'Suicide Squad'. He had a niche, he was great at it.
This had some good stuff, but this was counterweighted by some decidedly average/poor stuff. Especially the midsection where female characters were shoehorned in, and the end of Butch Cassidy - if it was 30 minutes long.

Orcs in the Hobbit aren't bred for war, they're just another race, a pretty weak one, but they have resilience above most humans. They fight best in their element, underground in the dark.JustinP1 said:

Oh yes, especially the only girl in 1945 Germany with access to not only a very healthy diet but Olay, Natural Essences and a set of styling tongs. That's when the film totally lost me.
