Ex Machina - been meaning to watch it for ages, finally managed to Saturday. fantastic film, really impressive. Great acting by the small but talented cast. That ended too.. Oh and Alicia Vikander is lovely. 8.5/10
Yep - saw this masterpiece in the cinema when it was first released. Properly good. It's a stunning film.
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi
Pretty good action film "based on true events", nice tension, action not too ridiculous.
Unfortunately it is a Michael Bay movie, and he never lets you quite forget it by throwing in nauseating cheeseball lines that break all the tension and make you groan. He is like kryptonite to quality film-making.
Film 8/10
Director 2/10
Net result 6/10

I know opinions are like @rseholes, but that film was one of the worst I've ever seen. So so tedious, and I really like Kaufman's other stuff. Watching someone make a movie of their own life - 2hrs of complete guff! I hope Anomalisa isn't more of the same
it is divisive I agree. for me synechdoche is a masterpiece but i love films that are theatrical in their ambitions and staging and that makes it more about the magic of cinema and storytelling rather than just what you see on screen. there's so much to see in synechdoche that passes you by such as the fact the opening scenes seem to be one day in caden's life but its actually several months compressed and its the only film that the dvd extras [critics and crew discussing wtf its about] has then made me rewatch it.
agree opinions are for the individual. i don't get any enjoyment from the current box office trends so happy to see someone like kaufman still getting funding even though most of his films have been commercial failures.

Lots of manly beards and explosions filmed through an orange tinted filter.....
above review is spot on.....
I watched "The Purge" last night for the first time. It has spawned a couple of sequels I see, so I may watch them too.
The story is basically this: one night a year it's OK to murder whoever you like. Between the hours of 7 pm and 7 am the next day, the police and emergency services will not respond. This is supposed to 'purge' the US's pent up anger and aggression and make the rest of the year much nicer.
Clearly there's some rather heavy social commentary here, but it makes an interesting premise for a film. I though it was OK although I could have done without the obligatory annoying children.

Red Letter's masterful take on the woeful steaming cack sandwich, that is Independence Day.
