Started watching "I am Legend" & after 15 mins switched it off!
Opening scene with the GT500's good... rest's a bit crap & the effects have dated badly.
See I thought that bit was awful & so "unrealistic" Just looked completely faked.

"Good" in context of thinking what it would be like to hammer a 'Stang through an empty NYC - bit like the GTO dream bit in Vanilla Sky driving.

I watched the Star Trek films over the weekend on SKY. I had them all on BR/DVD, but haven't watched them in a long time, if at all since I bought them. I had forgotten just how good the first films were/are (except V of course, which is terrible on every level). The effects may now look a little hokey (but still OK and didn't detract from the stories at all), but the interaction between the crew is great and, on the whole, the stories are engaging. I enjoyed them more than I remember.

The TNG films, however, really annoyed me (apart from First Contact) and haven't aged all that well. The effects in Generations and Insurrection actually look worse than the '80's Kirk films, with the only decent actor being Patrick Stewart (I know TOS crew weren't exactly great, but they did have a chemistry that was lacking in the latter TNG films)

Oh, we also watched Zootropolis, loved that one.

It didn't help that I'd just watched Threads for the first time ever the day before going to the cinema to see I am Legend. Just a rubbish film. Apparently the book ending is totally different and the twist is that the last human is actually the bad guy who steals their children in the night and does experiments on them while they're just trying to get on with their lives and rebuild.
Yeah, and I love apoc films, I also enjoy the Heston vehicle, The Omega Man. That too has a different ending.
The Will Smith version, the cinematic ending was typical murder-death-kill bks, but the alternative ending does show that reality that you mention, that the 'others' are trying to get on with their lives. I prefer the non-cinmatic ending.
Have you seen Soylent Green?

very good film

The OH is a bit of a Sacha Baron Cohen fan and insisted that we watch Grimsby over the weekend.

Just don't. Awful on every level. -1/10, and that's being generous.

Hehe, I thought the complete opposite! Just watched the first ten (or however many it is up to the Chris Pine reboot) at one a day and thought the Kirk ones have aged dreadfully. The first one, that I'd always held up as one of the best, story aside really did grate. Long (long, long, long) musical scenes of shuttle craft rounding the Enterprise were all a bit too 2001 and little more than fluff. I quickly became bored much to my surprise, plus the acting really was shown up as amateur dramatics.

By contrast the Picard ones were pretty exciting, moved at a reasonable pace and despite being sci-fI the personal interactions seemed real. Was never much of a fan of Nemesis but thought the battle and action scenes really were top notch. Enjoyed the stories too, especially First Contact which is probably my favourite of the pre-Pine films.

Looking forward to the next two over the next couple of days and wait for the latest's Blu Ray release with excitement.

I really like Star Trek the motion picture. People say/said it was a proper Trek film, but I loved the sense of wonder it helps convey, Wrath of Khan is still my fave though. I never liked Search for Spock but I forced myself to watch it when it was on the box last year, and I really enjoyed it, much better than I recall.
I am not that keen on Final Frontier but I really do like the concept, and the ending.
I can recall going to the pictures to watch Generations and feeling really quite gypped that Kirk was barely in it. Plus the ending.
One of the cool things is that from 2 onwards, it's the continuation of a story, does any other franchise do that?
Difficult to rate them I think, but I may go for;
2
4
3
1
6
5

I like the re-booted Star Trek, too.

When watching Generations, I noticed that the production was so cheap, they actually used the same Klingon Bird of Prey blowing up shot that was used in 1991's Star Trek 6!

If you watch them both, you will see they are exactly the same.

As someone raised on TNG (and who still watches The Best of Both Worlds on occasion- surely the best cliff hanger ever when released!) the films were such a disappointment I don't think I could watch them again. Generations had the opportunity to launch a whole new series of great films, but the plot was weaker than most TNG series-enders and dragging Kirk into it just to kill him in a really rubbish way wasted some pretty much priceless plot material.

I think by the late 90's Paramount were really lost as to what to do with the Franchise. Scifi had exploded into everything from Farsape's surreal small team adventurism to Babylon 5's political intrigue and dystopia or the distrust of authority from the X-Files. Suddenly a show about a single spaceship full of enlightened soft liberals with great healthcare exploring new places seemed to be a drying well.

I've watched quite a few of the Trek films again while they've been on Sky and one thing I have picked up on, which I really don't understand why I never noticed before, but Bones is a moany gobste.

Caught up with Mad Max Fury Road. Did they run out of budget, film or SD card storage? The ending is a damper squib than a squib that has been caught out in the rain without a coat and has had to walk home 5 miles to the squib family residence.

9pm tonight Film 4 - Out of the Furnace.
Grim, tense thriller.
One of my favourites, pacing is a little slow, but the acting and general feel is pretty dam good IMO
IMDB has it at 6.8 which seems harsh to me... meh, what do I know...

X-Men: Days of Future Past.

I enjoyed it. Not quite as much as First Class, but it was an enjoyable way to spend a few hours in front of the telly.
