Suicide Squad 7/10

Finally got around to watching this today, I like going when a films been out for a while as it's always nice and quiet.

Good cast and good characters, nicely violent and plenty of action. I'm sure there is a story in there when they filmed it but it seems to have been cut to shreds in the edit. Lets face it though, the story was irrelevant once you see those shorts!

Blood Father
Mel Gibson returns to from as a parolled recovering alcoholic in a trailer park havng to protect his estranged 'little girl' who has gotten on the wrong side of a cartel.
It's just a good ol' goddam, motherfkin', gritty gun totin' angry dad in the desert movie.
solid 8 for me...and how the hell does he still look that good?! he's 60 ffs....

The Dressmaker

I think the Mrs had mentioned that she would like to see this and had read the book. The title made me think it was going to be a period piece with whispy girls and rugged men and lots of romantic outback shots.

Wrong.

It's quite weird and unsettling in places, very un-hollywood, bloody and macabre. Hugo Weaving is brilliant, Kate Winslet isn't annoying, it looks great and it's entertaining.

The Empire Strikes Back on Blu ray last night.

35 years later it still stands as, by a country mile, the best in the Star Wars series. Also, as the film to be fiddled with the least by George Lucas in recent years, it's the nearest to the pure version of the original that we can watch.

Marvellous.

How did it compare to the original?

I watched the Dredd movie a while back when it was on TV. Never watched it at the cinema and never streamed it as I'd heard The Raid was better. I now feel bad about that as I thought it was a very good adaptation of Dredd for not much budget. Certainly better than the Stallone effort and worth a sequel or even a whole series- there must be the stories out there to support it.

Karl Urban did very well as well. Given how well he took to Bones in Star Trek I can see him becomming a go-to guy for a lot of parts.

10 Cloverfield Lane, a claustrophobic thriller starring John Goodman, and only two other characters.

Pretty good, a few shock moments and a strange sci-fi third act which seems completely out of pace with the rest of the film.

Oh and

Independence Day Resurgence

Well I guess this obvious remake may appeal to some. Bilge.

I thought Dredd was amazing. Never read the comics but Urban made a very believable badass. Best part was they way he killed Mama second in command. No dramatic action scene or one liner, just walks out and throws him off the balcony like he was taking out the rubbish

I really liked Karl Urban's Dredd. Bought it on Blu Ray. Much truer to the source material than Stallone's effort - although they did change Judge Anderson's character somewhat - but it worked well.

Jason Bourne

Thin storyline, frantic pace and generally disappointing.

David Brent: life on the road.

Can't say I really enjoyed it. There were a couple of funny moments, but all the jokes were a little bit too obvious.
The most interesting thing about it is I actually felt sorry for DB. Something I never did in the series.
Don't bother at the cinema. Catch it on TV by Christmas.

I thought the same. The pity I felt for DB detracted from the humour some what and towards the end I found it hard to laugh at him. Some of the songs were genius however and I thought it was a decent enough film in the end. I'd say a solid 6/10.

Just watched The Last Man On The Moon - a documentary about astronaut Gene Cernan and a potted history of the nasa space program. If you're a space nerd there's not much here that's new, but the quality and content are beautifully done. 9/10

PH connection: produced by Mark Stewart (son of JYS)

I bought this box set over the weekend:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00AHCKLIM/ref...
Prometheus To Alien Blu ray, 8 discs and only £15 - £3 per film! Never got to watch the films, which contain two versions each for Alien and Aliens, as the special features are so many; I ended up watching them - and I still haven't cracked the surface of the material on these discs! Absolute bargain.

I also watched Crimson Rivers, a French thriller with Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel. I loved that, very quirky, but in a good way.

War Dogs

I loved it. Thrilling story, well filmed and ended up nicely too. Jonah Hills laughs is priceless and at some points the whole cinema was genuinely laughing at what was happening on screen.

8/10

Bad Moms

Cheesy fun! Not exactly chick flick more like a female hangover. Of course, I would like anything with Mila Kunis in it.

10/10.

Also, no connection with Odeon at all but my wife & I although skeptical took out Limitless membership's at the end of May.
We have so far seen 17 different movies. At our local Odeon tickets cost £12 which means we got £204 worth of tickets for only £72. Limitless is £17.99 a month so 12 monthly payments of £17.99 = £215.88 which means anything we see from now until May is technically free.

Is there a thread covering best new series etc?

Like this thread but looking for a new series for the coming winter, we've not done a series since 24, house and prison break so very out of touch!

Tried breaking bad a while back but didnt do it for us within first couple of episodes (maybe it was our mood at the time)

Any suggestions? Really like the looks of the upcoming westworld but dont even know where its showing yet..

(Appolgies for thread hijack)
